What they do

A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Plan and oversee all maintenance and repair work, maintaining a high standard of safety utilizing the current district maintenance program. Help in the selection, assignment, scheduling and training of general custodians. Evaluate the performance of custodial staff on a regular basis. Maintain an inventory and recommend purchase of supplies, tools, and equipment. Ability to perform services in the following areas: Operation of boilers and related mechanical equipment; cleaning operations; general maintenance of buildings. General computer knowledge. Knowledge of energy management systems. Ability to organize work schedules, train and supervise personnel. Ability to handle emergency procedures including disconnection of utilities. Basic knowledge in plumbing, electrical and mechanical trouble-shooting and repair. Must have a boiler license. Good work and attendance record. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Perform any other tasks assigned by the Director of Building and Grounds.
