A Janitor or Cleaner provides cleaning and basic maintenance in buildings such as schools, offices, stores, hospitals or hotels. Cleans and polishes floors, removes trash, vacuums carpets, washes windows, cleans bathrooms, stocks building supplies such as light bulbs and paper towels and performs minor repairs as needed. Holds keys for rooms and building entrances and locks or unlocks them as needed.

Labor Candidates hired for a permanent Cleaner position are eligible to receive a $1,000 Sign-On Bonus. Contact the Human Resources Department at (585) 637-1915 for more information. Sign-on payments will be made after the candidate has worked in the position they were hired for, based on the below schedule: $400 paid after 60 days of work. $300 paid after 120 days of work. $300 paid after 180 days of work.
Primary Responsibilities:
Responsible for performing all of the routine cleaning duties in the school buildings as directed by the Head Custodian or his/her designee.
Key Functions:
Cleans, sweeps, mops, washes walls, dusts, cleans and polishes furniture and windows, woodwork, railings, radiators, window coverings, etc.; and performs other cleaning duties. Empties waste baskets, pencil sharpeners, etc. and disposes of rubbish. Cleans and washes lavatory fixtures, chalk boards and chalk trays. Replaces light bulbs, dispensers, etc. Fills dispensers with soap, disposable paper products, etc. Vacuums and cleans carpets and furniture; straightens office, classroom and cafeteria furniture. Sets up and prepares rooms for meetings, programs, etc. Secures and locks windows and doors. Turns off lights and small appliances. Continuously aware of all safety precautions, procedures, etc. and reports problems/ deficiencies. Gives assistance as necessary to educational personnel. Performs other duties as may be assigned from time to time. Performs duties as may be assigned by the Head Custodian or his/her designee.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Some cleaning experience also desirable but not necessary. The ability to work independently and manage time effectively. The ability to work collaboratively with peers and colleagues. The ability to carry out oral and written instructions. Displays a positive attitude and builds healthy relationships with students, staff and families.
