Job Description:
The State University of New York at Fredonia Facilities Services - Custodial Services department seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, 12-month, probationary/permanent Supervising Janitor (SG11) represented by CSEA. The hiring rate for this position is $47,695. The current shift is Monday - Friday, 7am-3:30pm, however, the actual shift may depend upon the results of a shift bid . The campus has a high reoccurring need to respond to urgent facilities needs outside of regular scheduled hours. Employees in this position may be called in or assigned to work outside their regular scheduled shift when operational circumstances require. Flexibility and availability to respond to these needs are essential functions of the position. This position is considered Essential Service and is subject to the terms and conditions of the Essential Service Personnel Policy. Fredonia employees designated essential must remain on duty or report to work at or before their scheduled starting time to avoid interruption of essential services unless directed or permitted to do otherwise, by their immediate supervisor. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Supervising Janitor supervises a diverse group of Janitors, Cleaners and Housekeepers by assigning work, periodically observing work performance, reviewing work activity reports, and inspecting assigned building areas for compliance with cleaning programs. Supervising Janitors are responsible for administering a custodial program and supervising and evaluating custodial tasks in the cleaning and care of public buildings and adjacent grounds. Typical Tasks (including but not limited to the following): Supervises and administers a program of systematic cleaning and care of assigned building areas or the entire program in accordance with established guidelines. Plans and schedules staff assignments and cleaning services; reassigns staff to ensure that work is accomplished according to schedule and that staff is fully utilized; and shifts personnel to handle emergency cleaning, maintenance, and care projects. Inspects buildings and assigned areas for compliance with cleaning guidelines; and investigates complaints of unsatisfactory service performance and takes corrective action. Informs staff of custodial and related policies, procedures and directives, including safety requirements, in meetings and memoranda. Evaluates and makes recommendations for equipment, changes in cleaning methods, and work performance standards to ensure a more effective and efficient cleaning program. Prepares a portion or the entirety of annual equipment, supplies, and personnel budget requests for the custodial operation. Supervises the custodial program inventory system, including the requisitioning and proper distribution and control of new cleaning equipment and supplies. Prepares or reviews for accuracy periodic reports, such as work activity, cost reports, and staff utilization and requirements and advises management on custodial operations. Performs the full range of supervisory duties such as interviewing and selecting staff; establishing training standards for new employees; resolving personnel issues; evaluating work performance, and taking appropriate counseling, coaching or disciplinary action, as necessary; approving timecards and requests for leave; and recommending retention or termination of employees. Provides oral and written instructions to staff for requested special cleaning services which vary from routine operations. Supervises unskilled maintenance and repairs to buildings and equipment, and requests semi-skilled or skilled trades staff as necessary. Supervises the arrangement of premises for public meetings, classes, graduations, and special events by directing the movement and placement of seating and other equipment as specified by the event coordinator. This position has been designated as an Essential Services Personnel position. It is the policy of Fredonia that employees designated as essential will be required to provide support by performing their normal and customary duties in the event of an emergency. Such service is required to maintain university properties and services in the event of an emergency. The essential personnel will vary depending on the nature and scope of the emergency. Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of satisfactory full-time experience in the custodial care or cleaning of buildings, offices, or institutional residences, of which one year of the experience must have been at a supervisory level . Must possess a valid State Driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Good knowledge of the University's cleaning and care practices and procedures. Good knowledge of cleaning equipment and effective custodial work performance standards. Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision. Working knowledge of the properties of various cleaning substances and chemicals. Familiarity with green cleaning techniques preferred. Working knowledge of effective inventory, requisitioning, and distribution techniques for cleaning supplies and equipment. Basic knowledge of personnel practices as they relate to hiring, evaluating employee performance, and employee rights and benefits as outlined in labor-management Agreements. Ability to effectively supervise a large group of employees. Ability to recognize below-standard production and take appropriate remedial action. Ability to understand, interpret, and carry out oral and written instructions and directives pertaining to custodial operations. Ability to prepare reports detailing department activities. Ability to orally communicate with others to exchange information and give guidance about custodial operations. Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission; Demonstrated commitment to the university, division, and profession.
