Job Description

This position is under immediate supervision of the Director of Child & Family Services. It is an important position to the College because all duties performed are visible and contribute greatly to the environment and overall appeal of our Child Care. Child Care is a fast-paced environment. This applicant knows fundamental concepts of custodial services to ensure a safe, clean, sanitary and functional environment for this location. This position performs standard tasks using established methods, principals, concepts, and procedures which will be learned through facilities/custodial trainings. Working with children will be required. In addition to typical custodial duties this applicant will need to be able to interact with teachers and children to support classrooms. This includes but is not limited to supporting breaks by assuming the responsibilities of the teachers. Substituting as a classroom teacher, and supporting the teachers as an assistant child care teacher. Direct supervision of children will be necessary as when working in this capacity. This applicant will need to perform all general cleaning for the center but also classroom cleaning in support of the classrooms. This may include sanitizing diaper changing cans, diaper changing tables, toys, and more. The Moon Bear class may need additional support when ratios increase past capacity or staff members do not attend. This is in the evening hours of our operation. In addition to complying with the child care licensing rules, applicant must ensure children are directly supervised when counted towards legal ratios. Applicant will be able to manage the routine of the children's needs and standards of Accreditation. Applicant for this position will arrive during hours that children are in care, thus interactions with children will occur. This person will need to have a friendly demeanor with children and other staff. They will also have to pass a background check from the Bureau of Child Care licensing and complete training hours per our licensing/accreditation regulations. This means attending our staff meetings. This person will be exposed to communicable diseases associated with young children. Dependability is a must. After arrival, trashes and bathrooms will need attention. The playgrounds and yard will need a walk through to ensure lost items, trash and broken toys are contended with. After those tasks are completed a walk through for visible grime, handprints and such will need taken care of. Work will be at the discretion of the Director/office who will act as a primary contact for daily task and requirements. Supporting classroom clean up for closing hours will be followed by typical cleaning task which are posted as primary cleaning responsibilities. Bathrooms will need to be cleaned and sanitized periodically throughout the day. The last classroom in use will need to be cleaned after all of the children have gone at day end. Staff meetings may alter these planned hours. Work hours are 1:30 pm to 10:00pm Monday - Thurs and Friday 12:00 pm - 8:30 pm (some flexibility within reason). Ability to interact with children, parents and staff members in a positive respectful way. Ability to use a timecard system. Ability to complete all College required training courses. Ability to be dependable. Ability to safely move 75 lbs. Ability to position oneself to perform custodial duties. Ability to safely use a ladder on a regular basis. Ability to perform equipment maintenance tasks. Receive and follow verbal/written instructions. Ability to read and understand SDS labeling requirements. Knowledge of and ability to adhere to the safety requirements of OSHA and ISSA. Snow removal skills and ability to use snow shovels and ice melt solutions. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities. Applicant will need to assist in the classrooms to support the ratios of the Bureau of Child Care Licensing. While in the classroom this position will: Interact with teachers and children to support the classroom routine, Support breaks by assuming supervision of children substituting as a classroom teacher, and supporting the teachers as an assistant childcare teach. Work directly with children by following the standards set forth in our Classroom Observation subject to the rules of interactions in this document. Manage routine of the children's needs and standards of Accreditation. Comply with childcare licensing rules, and ensure children are directly supervised when counted toward legal ratios. Must be able to read, write, and do basic arithmetic. Pass a criminal background check from the Bureau of Child Care Licensing. Pass a TB test (to be set up by SLCC upon offer). No experience necessary. Experience cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms. Experience working with or around young children.
