The Grand Isle Supervisory Union is looking for a custodian. This is a unique opportunity as the position is split between two school districts.
Grand Isle School:
Hours 1:00 PM to 6:00
PM South Hero School:
Hours 6:30 PM - 9:30
PM Hourly Rate of Pay:
$18.70 - $23.68, based upon experienceSummaryThe Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly environment for students, staff, and the public within the assigned school facility. This role involves performing routine and comprehensive cleaning tasks, minor maintenance, and assisting with school activities and events. The ideal candidate is reliable, possesses a strong work ethic, and is committed to supporting a positive and effective learning environment.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesCleaning and Sanitation:
Perform daily cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and waxing floors in classrooms, hallways, offices, and common areas.

Clean and sanitize restrooms and drinking fountains, ensuring they are stocked with necessary supplies (soap, toilet paper, paper towels).Empty waste receptacles and transport trash to disposal areas.

Clean and wash windows, walls, furniture, and fixtures.

Perform deep cleaning and stripping/waxing of floors during school breaks and as needed.
Safety and Security:
Ensure buildings and grounds are secure, locking doors and windows at the end of the shift.

Monitor facility conditions and report needed repairs or unsafe conditions immediately to the Maintenance Supervisor or Principal.

Assist in setting up and tearing down equipment for school events, assemblies, and athletic activities.

Respond to and clean up spills, bodily fluids, and other emergencies, following appropriate safety protocols and using the appropriate equipment.

Clear walkways and entrances of snow, ice, or debris to ensure safe passage.

Complete required training for performance of job duties.
Maintenance and Inventory:
Perform minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, tightening screws, and making minor repairs that do not require specialized licensing.

Receive, store, and manage inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment.

Operate and maintain standard custodial equipment (e.g., floor buffers, wet vacs).
Communication and Teamwork:
Work collaboratively with school staff, administration, and other custodians.

Follow all established safety procedures and utilize protective equipment (PPE) as required.
QualificationsEducation/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred. Prior experience in custodial, janitorial, or maintenance work is highly desirable.
Skills:
Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, and equipment.

Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.

Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions, including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand, walk, climb, and reach for extended periods; frequently lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds; and operate heavy cleaning equipment.
Other:
Must successfully pass a background check and fingerprinting, as required for school employees.
