Non-Exempt General Description Under the general direction of the Aquatic Supervisor, the Head Lifeguard performs responsible supervisory and administrative work. The position includes supervision of full-time, part-time, and seasonal lifeguards, as well as responsibility for the safety of all pool and beach areas. Essential Job Functions Assists the Aquatic Supervisor with recruitment, training, and scheduling of staff. Performs daily, weekly, and monthly checks of pools, pool chemicals, pump rooms, and lifeguard beach towers to ensure proper maintenance and safety practices are maintained. Assists the Aquatic Supervisor with day-to-day administrative duties and operations of pools, beaches, and staff. Performs employee performance evaluations. Acts as the Aquatic Supervisor's designee in their absence. Performs routine aquatic training for aquatic staff. Assists the Aquatic Supervisor in conducting swimming and running tests for lifeguard staff periodically. Vigilantly monitors swimmers, bathers, weather, and water conditions. Performs rescues, artificial respiration, first aid, and emergency work as necessary. Warns against dangerous practices and keeps weak swimmers and non-swimmers out of deep water. Enforces rules and regulations regarding swimming areas in a tactful and effective manner. Prepares first aid and maintenance reports and maintains equipment. Trains physically to maintain the abilities necessary to perform job duties and meet physical requirements. Notifies the proper authorities if members of the public refuse to follow safety rules. Works with the public. Performs pool maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned. These essential job functions are not intended to be a complete statement of all duties performed. Employees may be required to perform other job-related duties as necessary. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills Knowledge of water rescue methods and first aid techniques. Knowledge of computer software usage. Knowledge of rules and regulations concerning public safety. Ability to handle frightened or injured persons in the water. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly but tactfully. Ability to remain alert for extended periods. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public. Skill in lifesaving techniques and administering first aid. Education and Experience The required skills would normally be acquired through specialized training. At least one (1) year of lifeguard experience is preferred. A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Licenses, Certifications, and Requirements The following certifications are required: Valid Red Cross Advanced Lifeguard/Lifesaving Certificate Valid First Aid and CPR/AED Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Basic Life Support (BLS) Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) Water Safety Instructor Lifeguard Management EMT certification is preferred. Essential Physical Skills Acceptable eyesight, with or without correction. Vision of 20/40 uncorrected. Acceptable hearing without a hearing aid. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Moderate lifting and carrying of approximately 15-44 pounds. Swimming. Walking. Bending. Running. Paddling.
