Only on school days; hours approx. 0600-0830 and 2:30-4:30 School year starts 8/27/2026 Position Summary The Bus Monitor plays an essential role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive behavior of students while they are being transported to and from school. The Bus Monitor assists the bus driver by supervising students, maintaining a safe and respectful environment, and supporting students with boarding, riding, and exiting the bus. This position may serve on the elementary route and/or the middle/high school route. Essential Responsibilities Student Safety Assist students safely boarding and exiting the bus. Ensure students remain seated and follow established bus safety rules throughout the route. Monitor student behavior to maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful environment. Assist students during emergency evacuation drills and actual emergencies, following district procedures. Be attentive to students' physical and emotional well-being during transportation. Student Supervision Provide appropriate supervision and redirection using positive behavior management strategies. Address minor behavioral concerns promptly and respectfully. Report significant behavioral or safety concerns to the bus driver and school administration. Help maintain a calm and welcoming atmosphere for all students. Communication Maintain effective communication with the bus driver regarding student needs and safety concerns. Communicate professionally with school staff, administrators, and families when directed. Complete written incident reports when necessary. Student Support Assist younger students with backpacks, seat belts (if applicable), and safely finding their seats. Support students with special needs as outlined in their transportation plans, if assigned. Model respectful, patient, and professional interactions with students. General Duties Arrive on time and be prepared for each scheduled route. Maintain confidentiality regarding student information. Follow all district transportation policies and procedures. Participate in required safety trainings and professional development. Perform other duties related to safe student transportation as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience working with children or adolescents preferred. Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to establish positive relationships with students of varying ages. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Ability to pass required CORI, SORI, and fingerprint-based background checks. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Understanding of child development and age-appropriate behavior. Ability to manage student behavior in a positive and respectful manner. Ability to follow safety protocols and emergency procedures. Dependable, punctual, and flexible. Ability to work collaboratively with transportation staff and school personnel. Physical Requirements Ability to board and exit a school bus multiple times during routes. Ability to walk the aisle of the bus while the vehicle is stopped. Ability to assist students entering and exiting the bus. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds when assisting students or handling student belongings. Ability to sit, stand, bend, and reach as necessary throughout the route. Work Environment Work is performed primarily on a school bus during morning and afternoon transportation routes. Exposure to varying weather conditions while assisting students outside the bus. Regular interaction with elementary, middle, and high school students. Expectations Employees are expected to: Place student safety above all other responsibilities.
