Transportation Route Coordinator/ Director of Transportation

This is a temporary position.

General Statement of Job

Bus Aides/Bus Monitors play an integral role in assisting the school bus driver in providing a safe, orderly, and efficient transportation service for students. They support the needs of students during routine activities and emergency situations.

Bus Monitors effectively supervise and manage the behavior of students and often provide support for an individual student or group of students with special needs and/or disabilities.

Essential Job Functions

Assist students with special needs including when entering and exiting the bus

Ensure the safe and orderly conduct of students on the bus

Provide instruction to students regarding proper safety; ensure seat belts are worn

Participate in scheduled emergency bus evacuation drills

Assist parents and school personnel with safe loading and unloading of students

Additional assignments as assigned by the supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of operating a school bus; general knowledge of the geography of the District and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus. Ability to read and write. Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment. Ability to assist children using patience and understanding. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.

Minimum Training and Experience

Must have a high school diploma or GED

Experience working with children

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.

Work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting.

Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
