The YMCA Y Scholars Group Assistant position is an 8-week paid experience designed for people who want to gain hands-on experience working with young people while developing the skills needed to become a strong youth leader. You'll work alongside experienced Group Leaders, learn how high-quality afterschool programs operate, practice leading activities, and build relationships with elementary and middle school students. And if you excel? Our goal is to prepare high-performing Group Assistants to take the next step into a YMCA Y Scholars Group Leader position. Bring the effort, reliability, and willingness to learn. THIS ISN'T JUST AN INTERNSHIP. IT'S A STARTING POINT.
Some internships have you watching. This one gets you doing. You'll be in the program every afternoon, working directly with students and learning from experienced youth development professionals. You'll practice how to: Engage a group of students Support positive behavior Facilitate games and activities Help students academically Build relationships with young people Communicate as part of a professional team Maintain safe and organized program spaces Step up when something needs to get done Over the course of eight weeks, we want you to become more confident, capable, and independent. The goal isn't for you to stay an assistant forever. The goal is to help you develop the skills to lead.
WHAT IS Y SCHOLARS?
The YMCA Y Scholars Program believes every young person deserves opportunities to discover their strengths, develop their voice, and realize their potential. Our afterschool programs are about more than providing a place for students to go after school. We create environments where young people can learn, play, create, lead, build friendships, try new things, and feel like they belong. Through academic support, enrichment, physical activity, leadership opportunities, and strong relationships with caring adults, we help students grow both inside and outside the classroom. As a Group Assistant, you'll help make that experience possible.
WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY DO
You won't spend your internship sitting behind a desk. You'll be right in the middle of the action. You'll work alongside Group Leaders and Site Leaders to help make each afternoon safe, organized, engaging, and fun.
Your responsibilities will include:
Actively supervising students and helping maintain a safe program environment Building relationships with students so they feel welcomed, supported, and included Supporting Group Leaders during lessons, activities, transitions, and daily routines Helping students academically through homework assistance, reading, projects, and other learning activities Getting involved in enrichment including sports, games, art, creative projects, and hands-on activities Practicing activity facilitation as you develop the confidence to lead students yourself Reinforcing expectations and positive behavior with consistency and encouragement Supporting attendance and basic program documentation Helping prepare and organize materials and program spaces Participating in school events, family nights, celebrations, and other program activities when needed Jumping in where you're needed and learning how a strong team works together The more you're ready to learn and take initiative, the more opportunities you'll have to practice leadership.

But you do need to be ready to learn.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To qualify for the Group Assistant position, you must: Be 18 years of age or older Have completed 48 college units OR pass an Instructional Aide Exam Don't have 48 units? We'll support you with information about taking the exam. Successfully clear required DOJ/FBI background checks Complete CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within 30 days of hire Training is provided at no cost to you.
YOUR 8 WEEKS ARE ABOUT GROWTH
We want you to finish this internship stronger than when you started. Throughout your experience, you'll receive opportunities for training, coaching, feedback, and hands-on practice as you build the skills needed to work successfully with young people.
