Job Description
Parks & Recreation Coordinator - Youth Development The City of Roanoke's Parks & Recreation Department is seeking a knowledgeable, energetic, and creative recreation professional with a passion for youth development and community engagement. The successful candidate will perform responsible professional work coordinating and overseeing youth development programs and services across multiple locations, including the Department's recreation centers and other program sites. Responsibilities include planning, promoting, implementing, and evaluating after school programs, summer camps, youth enrichment and nutrition programs, recreational activities, trips, special events, and other initiatives designed to support the positive development of youth. The position provides leadership and direction for assigned recreation centers and program sites, including the coordination of daily operations, programming, staffing, facility use, rentals, and community engagement. Work includes supervising and developing staff, establishing program goals and objectives, developing and administering budgets, coordinating schedules and resources, assessing program and operational risks, ensuring compliance with applicable policies and procedures, and preparing reports and recommendations for management. The Program Coordinator will develop and maintain effective relationships with schools, community organizations, families, youth serving agencies, and other partners to identify community needs and expand opportunities for youth. The position will monitor participation, program effectiveness, customer satisfaction, and other performance measures and use this information to improve services and maximize available resources. The successful candidate must demonstrate strong organizational skills, sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to manage multiple programs, sites, priorities, and staff simultaneously while maintaining a high standard of customer service and program quality. Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's degree with a major in Recreation Administration, Parks and Recreation, Youth Development, Education, Human Services, or a related field; five years of progressively responsible experience and/or training in youth development, recreation programming, community programming, or a related field; and an equivalent combination of education and experience. Supervisory experience is preferred. Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Professional certification is expected, to include Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP). The City of Roanoke is an Equal Employment Opportunity/AA/M/F/Disability Employer.
