Starting at $24.00 per hour, plus tips Core Business Purpose The General Manager is responsible for leading Backyard Public House to deliver exceptional guest experiences while maintaining strong financial performance, operational excellence, and a positive team culture. Our goal is to operate a successful neighborhood restaurant and bar where guests feel welcome, employees feel supported, and the business operates efficiently and profitably. The General Manager plays a key role in creating the consistent food, beverage, service, and atmosphere that makes Backyard a place guests want to return to. Position Summary The General Manager oversees all daily operations of Backyard Public House, including staff leadership, financial performance, guest experience, food and beverage operations, facility management, and regulatory compliance. This is a hands-on management position. The General Manager is expected to maintain a regular presence on the floor, work alongside employees, and directly support service and operations when needed. The GM should understand what is happening throughout the restaurant and be willing to step in wherever necessary to keep operations running smoothly. The GM is responsible for ensuring company standards for service, food, beverage, cleanliness, atmosphere, safety, and hospitality are consistently met.
Key Responsibilities Operations & Service Leadership:
Oversee all front-of-house and back-of-house operations Maintain an active presence on the floor and regularly work alongside the team during service Work scheduled floor shifts as needed to stay connected to daily operations, guests, and employee performance Step into bartending, serving, hosting, food running, bussing, expo, or other operational roles when needed Lead from the floor during busy shifts rather than managing solely from the office Remain visible and accessible to employees and guests, particularly during high-volume periods Maintain high standards for service, food quality, beverage quality, cleanliness, and hospitality Monitor guest flow, ticket times, table turns, and overall service performance Maintain strong communication between front-of-house and kitchen teams Lead pre-shift meetings and clearly communicate expectations, priorities, specials, promotions, and operational updates Observe employee performance firsthand and provide real-time coaching, direction, and support Ensure opening, closing, and shift procedures are completed correctly Address operational challenges quickly and professionally Maintain consistency in company policies, procedures, recipes, and service standards Understand each operational position well enough to support employees and identify opportunities for improvement
Food & Beverage Operations:
Maintain consistent standards for food and beverage quality, presentation, portions, and recipes Work closely with kitchen leadership and employees to maintain efficient food production and ticket times Ensure bartenders consistently follow company recipes, portion standards, and proper pouring procedures Monitor product quality and address issues before they negatively impact the guest experience Maintain appropriate food and beverage inventory levels Monitor waste, comps, spills, overpouring, and product loss Ensure menus, specials, and promotions are communicated effectively to employees Ensure employees understand menu items and are able to confidently make recommendations and upsell Monitor overall execution of food and beverage service and identify opportunities for improvement Maintain strong communication between the kitchen, bar, and service team
Financial Performance & Cost Control:
Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly sales performance Understand the major revenue drivers of Backyard Public House and actively work to improve performance Manage labor costs through effective scheduling and staffing decisions Monitor food, beverage, inventory, and operating costs Review financial reports and P&L statements Understand and manage key operating expenses Identify opportunities to increase sales and improve profitability Monitor sales trends and adjust staffing and operations accordingly Prevent waste, theft, overpouring, cash loss, and inventory loss Maintain appropriate inventory levels while controlling unnecessary costs Investigate unusual variances or financial discrepancies and take appropriate action Balance cost control with maintaining strong service and guest experience standards
Staff Leadership & Development:
Recruit, hire, train, and develop employees Build and maintain appropriate staffing levels for the needs of the business Create schedules that balance business needs, employee availability, and labor goals Coach and mentor supervisors, managers, and employees Set clear expectations and consistently hold employees accountable Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback Address performance, attendance, conduct, and disciplinary issues when necessary Recognize strong employee performance and reinforce company values Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and hospitality Lead by example and demonstrate the work ethic and attitude expected from the team Develop employees who show leadership potential Train and develop the Assistant General Manager to take on greater leadership responsibilities and potentially become a future
GM Guest Experience & Community Presence:
Ensure guests receive friendly, professional, and welcoming service Create an environment that encourages repeat business and builds guest loyalty Regularly interact with guests while working on the floor Build relationships with regular guests and members of the local community Resolve guest concerns and complaints quickly and professionally Maintain awareness of the guest experience throughout each shift Ensure service remains attentive and consistent during both slower and high-volume periods Support company marketing initiatives, events, promotions, specials, and community involvement Work with employees to increase guest engagement and promote food, beverages, specials, and events Maintain a welcoming and consistent atmosphere that reflects the Backyard Public House brand
Compliance, Safety & Responsible Service:
Ensure compliance with all applicable Washington State liquor laws and regulations Maintain food safety and sanitation standards Ensure employees follow proper ID checking and responsible alcohol service procedures Ensure required employee permits and certifications remain current Maintain workplace safety standards Respond appropriately to guest, employee, and facility safety concerns Maintain appropriate procedures for handling intoxicated or disruptive guests Document and report incidents appropriately Maintain compliance with company policies and applicable employment regulations Work with company leadership and HR when employee, safety, or compliance concerns arise
Administrative & Facility Management:
Approve invoices and manage vendor relationships Monitor inventory levels, ordering, receiving, and storage processes Maintain accurate payroll and employee documentation Review schedules and timekeeping for accuracy Complete required administrative responsibilities accurately and on time Ensure the facility is clean, organized, safe, and well maintained Conduct regular walkthroughs of guest areas, kitchen, bar, restrooms, storage areas, and exterior areas Identify maintenance needs and coordinate repairs when necessary Oversee POS system accuracy and operational reporting Complete required company reporting accurately and on time Communicate regularly with the Area Manager, Ownership, HR, and other members of the Tangen Hospitality leadership team
Qualifications:
Previous restaurant, bar, or hospitality management experience preferred Strong leadership and team management skills Willingness and ability to regularly work on the floor alongside employees Strong understanding of restaurant food and beverage operations Experience managing labor, inventory, food costs, beverage costs, and other operating expenses Ability to interpret financial reports and P&L statements Strong organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills Ability to coach, develop, and hold employees accountable Ability to remain calm and make effective decisions in a fast-paced environment Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and high-volume shifts as required by the business
