This position monitors all dispatch functions and ensures smooth operation of the Communications Center. Makes supervisory decisions as needed. Serves as the primary point of contact for interagency coordination. Monitors and assists with training when needed. Reports directly to Assistant Director of Operations and provides suggestions to improve operations. Directly manages Assistant Shift Supervisor and all Communications Officers on the floor. Ensures shift is properly manned and employees report to duty as assigned. Makes supervisory decisions with regards to shift operations as necessary. Per General Order 15.01, candidates must: have a minimum of three years of experience as a Communications Officer or one year of experience as a Communications Assistant Supervisor. be certified to receive/process emergency calls and dispatch all three disciplines (Police/Fire/EMS) within one year of assignment. attend a training course with the Communications Training Coordinator to become knowledgeable in the LEFTA and Communications Training Program within three months of the assignment date. It is not required to be a Certified Training Officer (CTO). Candidates must also meet the good standing criteria outlined in OCSO General Order 11.03 and must have completed at least 100 full-duty days in the 12 months prior to the application deadline unless a waiver is granted by the Sheriff or Designee. (Verbal and written counseling are not considered disciplinary violations.) The Sheriff/Undersheriff may waive certain eligibility requirements upon recommendation from all levels of the candidate's supervisory chain. Waiver requests must be submitted in a memo and processed through the chain of command. Do not submit the Notice of Intent to Test until any required waivers have been approved.

Physical Requirements :

Must be able to sit for 11+ hours. Use hands, handle and feel. Must be able to reach with hands and arms. Must be able to hear and understand communications through a telephone and radio. Must have clear vision at 20 inches to view computer monitor and distance vision to view maps. Must have the ability to identify and distinguish colors on a computer monitor and on maps. Must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Language Ability:

Requires the ability to read and understand simple instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to citizens, deputies and other employees. Must be able to speak with clarity, voice control and confidence and to articulate information to others and answer questions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently.

Intelligence :

Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving standardized situations. Requires the ability to apply principles and to make independent judgements in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to essential job functions.

Requires the ability to deal with the public. Must be able to work with fellow employees in close proximity to you. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy in frequent contact with various emergency responder professionals and the public.

Work Environment :

There is moderate noise in the office. The office is crowded with desks, file cabinets and computers.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of records, programs and functions under charge, and mandates and regulations.

Interpersonal Communication:

Must be an excellent communicator in order to coordinate operational tasks with coworkers and outside emergency services who would work in conjunction with the Sheriff's Office. Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.
