Job Description
Better Half is hiring! We're looking for friendly, responsible, and hardworking Shift Leaders to join our team at our new NW Thurman St. location. We're a high-volume sandwich shop serving breakfast and lunch, with both meat and vegan options, plus a busy catering operation running alongside our daily service. After 6 years in our original North Portland spot, we're excited to be moving into a newly renovated space in NW Portland, with an anticipated opening in late September 2026.The RoleWe're looking to hire Shift Leaders who will be responsible for day-to-day floor operations, in addition to taking point as lead in one of these areas: Catering Lead
This role involves managing food, service, and the customer experience. You won't be supervising team member performance, attendance, or scheduling. For the right person, this role can eventually grow into a salaried management position with more responsibility and benefits.
Core ResponsibilitiesKeyholder responsible for opening and closing shiftsEnsuring day-to-day floor operations run smoothlyStrong presence on the floor, leading by examplePrioritizing tasks and working in a supportive role across multiple stationsManaging food presentation, timeliness, and accuracyProviding warm and hospitable customer service, and remaining solution-orientedBringing a sense of urgency to everything you doEffective written and verbal communication skillsOrdering product and taking inventorySchedule and Working ConditionsThis is a full-time position, about 36 hours a week. A typical schedule is 4 shifts a week with 3 days off (2 of them consecutive). We're open seven days a week: Sun
Your schedule will vary based on business needs and will be based on supporting the hours of operation. Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, is a must. Base hourly pay after successfully completing the probationary period is $20.80/hr plus tips. Tips are split evenly among everyone on shift and typically add another $6-10 an hour.
All new team members start with a 90-day probationary period, so we can make sure we're a great match for one another. During probation, your base pay is $19.80/hr plus tips. Once you successfully complete probation, you'll get a raise to $20.80/hr. We'll be looking at genuine hospitality, commitment to the team and culture, performance, attendance, and attitude.

Required:
1-2 years working in a high-volume restaurant, with at least 1 year of leadership experience 18+ with a current Oregon Food Handler's card and OLCC service permit (or able to obtain both before your start date)Consistently punctual with reliable attendanceAble to multitask, make quick decisions, and stay detail-oriented under pressureFamiliar with food safety regulations, Oregon health codes, and allergen protocolsAble to be on your feet for hours at a time, lift up to 50lbs, and bend and reach to complete some tasksHow to applySend us your resume and let us know which Shift Lead role you're applying for (Catering or Espresso), along with your experience in that area and why you'd be a great fit.We will begin reaching out on Monday 9/7 to set up phone interviews.
