The Durham Museum is looking for positive, hard-working and engaging people to join our team. If you love ice cream and have always wondered what it would be like to be a Soda Jerk, we want to hear from you. No prior Soda Jerk experience required, we will train you on how to create hand crafted ice cream treats. In addition, you get to come to work everyday in a National Historic Landmark building that used to be a former train station.

Position Overview:

The Soda Fountain Specialist interacts with customers and performs daily functions in the soda fountain including serving/selling hand-crafted ice cream treats and beverages, as well as quick prep food and snacks. The Soda Fountain Specialist will be trained to master all areas of the Soda Fountain and should aspire to become an "expert level" Soda Jerk. In this role they will foster positive customer relations and create an engaging and memorable experience for all visitors.

Essential Job Functions:

Execute duties passionately and to museum standards with excellent customer service in mind. Prepare, serve, and sell all food and beverage items to meet operating standards of quality and consistency. Knowledgeable of current menu items and assists customers with selections and makes recommendations. Enrich the experience by providing informative historical and "fun facts" about the ice cream treats and The Museum. Operate cash registers following prescribed cash procedures. Comply with all health department regulations. Perform opening and closing procedures (food prep, stocking, cleaning, trash removal, etc.) in all areas. Assist with the presentation and replenishment of inventory during shift and report any low stock or supply needs to management. Report any maintenance needed in the museum to facilities or management. Maintain accurate working knowledge of Toast software. Maintain knowledge of merchandise and products carried and stay updated on current museum events and exhibits. Work with the Customer Experience Management to establish and execute annual departmental goals. This role may also be called on to assist customers in the museum shop and at the admission desk after appropriate training. Support the museum's overall strategies and operational activities within the Customer Experience department. Participate in all mandatory training and safety programs required and provided by the museum.

Qualifications:

Must be 16 years of age or older. Customer Service experience preferred. Commitment to excellent customer service and teamwork. Effective and timely communication skills. Ability to work a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends.

Working Conditions:

Part-time hourly non-exempt position with a variable schedule to meet museum needs. Must be available during the day time on weekdays. Routine periods of standing, bending, and stooping. Must be able to use hands to prep and serve. Must be able to lift boxes up to 40 lbs.; to unload and stock merchandise. Position ranges between 10-35 hours a week. Flexible schedule with weekend hours required. Most hours will be during standard museum operating hours but may include holidays/evenings to accommodate museum rentals and special events.
