Job Summary Nitty Gritty City Tours is looking for a friendly, dependable, and engaging person to lead walking tours in downtown Austin. This is a part-time position, typically 3-4 days per week . Sunday and Monday morning availability is required , along with availability on at least one of Tuesday or Wednesday . Additional morning and evening availability is a plus. Most tours are during the morning or daytime, with occasional evening tours as well. Afternoon tours are seasonal. You'll primarily lead our History tour, along with occasional Haunted History ghost tours—usually just a few evening tours each month. There are opportunities to learn some of our other tours as well, based on your availability. You do not need previous tour guide experience or an extensive knowledge of Austin history. We provide the material and training. What matters most is that you communicate well, enjoy interacting with people, can learn and tell a good story, and are someone the team and our guests can count on. Duties Lead approximately two-hour walking tours through downtown Austin Learn tour material and turn it into a natural, engaging presentation Share Austin history and stories in a conversational way Make guests feel welcome and comfortable asking questions Answer questions and offer Austin recommendations when you can Keep groups moving safely and tours running on schedule Lead occasional evening ghost tours Learn additional tours over time as needed and as your interests allow Stay in touch with the team about scheduling and tour assignments What We're Looking For Spanish fluency is a plus. Additional pay may be available for guides who can lead full tours in Spanish. Preferred, not required. Excellent verbal communication skills Friendly, personable, and comfortable speaking in front of groups Dependable and punctual Able to learn and retain a substantial amount of tour material Comfortable walking and speaking outdoors for approximately two hours Interested in Austin, history, storytelling, travel, hospitality, theater, or similar subjects Available Sundays and Mondays, plus at least one of Tuesday or Wednesday Able to occasionally work evening tours Previous guiding, teaching, acting, hospitality, public speaking, or customer service experience is helpful, but not required Schedule This is a part-time position with variable hours, generally 3-4 days per week . Sunday and Monday availability is required. We're also looking for someone who can work either Tuesday or Wednesday, and ideally both. Most available tours are during the morning or daytime. We also need someone who can occasionally lead an evening ghost tour, generally around 1-5 evenings per month . Our busiest season is fall through spring, and things slow down considerably during the Texas summer. If taking most or all of the summer off sounds appealing, that is absolutely an option. Because of the schedule, this position can work especially well alongside school, freelance work, another part-time job, or another flexible schedule. Pay Pay-rates happen in stages Study-period pay (only while learning material) is minimum wage, up to 30 hours. Probation-period pay is $40 per tour for the first four weeks, plus tips . After the first four weeks, regular guide pay increases to $50 per tour plus tips . Most tours are approximately two hours, making the regular rate equivalent to approximately $25/hour, plus tips . We periodically review guide compensation, and guides who do great work and stay with us may receive additional raises and discretionary performance or review bonuses over time. About the Job This is a great fit for someone who loves Austin and genuinely likes people and enjoys telling stories. There's plenty of material to learn, but our best tours feel conversational and natural rather than scripted. The goal is to know the stories well enough that you can tell them in your own voice, answer questions, joke with guests, and make people feel like they're exploring Austin with an interesting local rather than listening to a lecture.
