hybrid work location with occasional evening and/or weekend work, as needed Job Location Raleigh, North Carolina Department HR Classification and Compensation About the Department The Classification and Compensation Department is within NC State University Human Resources and is responsible for administering, overseeing, and managing the classification systems and compensation programs as well as the administration and oversight of federal regulations and state policies for University positions subject to and exempt from the NC State Human Resources Act ( SHRA and EPS positions). The department is also responsible for developing, monitoring and maintaining compensation programs and initiatives for Faculty, EPS and Senior Academic and Administrative Officers. The Classification and Compensation Consultant serves as a strategic partner to NC State, playing an important role within the University's classification and compensation infrastructure. By providing guidance and insight, this position ensures that human resources (HR) practices are aligned with both university and state policies, creating fair and competitive position management and compensation structures that attract and retain top talent. The work you do will directly impact the University's ability to foster a thriving and effective workforce.Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Consultation and Partnership Collaborate with campus leaders, administrators, and HR representatives to provide expert guidance on job design, classification, and compensation practices. Offer insight into compensation trends and help develop long-term HR strategies that align with the University's mission and academic needs. Advise on salary actions, job categories, and titles in accordance with university policies and external benchmarks. Compensation Analysis and Reporting Conduct detailed compensation analysis, salary benchmarking, and market research to support decisions on compensation and classification. Prepare comprehensive reports for the University of North Carolina ( UNC ) System Office, State Human Resources, and NC State leadership, ensuring accurate and timely salary data. Analyze salary adjustments and provide recommendations based on relevant market data. Communication and Stakeholder Engagement Communicate complex compensation and classification issues clearly, both in writing and verbally, to various audiences, including leadership and campus stakeholders. Serve as a liaison between departments and HR representatives, providing guidance on compliance with policies, regulations, and best practices. Lead discussions on sensitive issues related to classification and compensation, offering tactful, well-informed advice. Project Management and Training Lead and manage HR projects, coordinating timelines, tasks, and deliverables while ensuring university-wide alignment. Participate in HR-related initiatives, offering expertise on classification, compensation, and organizational design. Develop and deliver training on HR policies, procedures, and best practices related to compensation and job classification. Other Responsibilities In addition to the core responsibilities of this role, there may be occasional opportunities to take on additional responsibilities by participating in the HR-related initiatives. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from a four-year college or university and two years of progressively responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices in the context of organizational goals and objectives; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions. Other Required Qualifications Experience in job analysis, compensation principles, job design, and organizational structure. Proficient in using Excel for data analysis, reporting, and insights. Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and build consensus. A solid foundation in HR principles, including job classification and compensation. Experience managing projects and balancing multiple tasks with deadlines. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with job analysis, design and compensation structures within Higher education setting or environment compensation and job analysis Background in organizational development and design. Familiarity with enterprise-based HR Information Management Systems (e.g., PeopleSoft) and Talent Management/Applicant Tracking Systems (e.g., PeopleAdmin, PeopleClick).
