RFL is transitioning from a specialized company into a larger, dynamic player in its industry. As the company scales, it is building a dedicated human resources function to support its expanding workforce and evolving operational needs. This position represents a unique opportunity to join RFL at a defining stage of growth and to shape the HR infrastructure from the ground up. Position Overview and Reporting Structure Research for Life, LLC (RFL) is seeking an experienced Human Resources and Payroll professional to design, implement, and manage all aspects of human resources and payroll operations. This is a foundational role carrying significant autonomy, direct visibility to executive leadership, and meaningful impact on the company's trajectory. The position reports directly to the Co-Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel, and shall also be responsive to and directed by RFL's owners and members of its Board of Directors. The Human Resources and Payroll Manager will work closely with leadership to develop and implement HR policies, procedures, and practices aligned with RFL's strategic objectives and applicable regulatory requirements. Given the highly regulated nature of RFL's operations, this role will collaborate with leadership at each stage of building the HR function to ensure compliance with all governing laws, regulations, and company standards. Key Responsibilities The Human Resources and Payroll Manager will be responsible for the following: (a) Design, implement, and manage HR policies, procedures, and an employee handbook ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws across all operating jurisdictions. (b) Ensure compliance with multi-state employment laws, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, Title VII, OSHA, and applicable state-specific regulations. (c) Create and maintain accurate, confidential personnel records and HR documentation. (d) Develop and administer benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, PTO, and other employee benefits. (e) Build and manage a structured recruitment, hiring, and talent acquisition process. (f) Manage employee onboarding and offboarding, including orientation, training coordination, and exit processes. (g) Serve as a point of contact for employee relations matters, including performance management, disciplinary actions, and workplace investigations. (h) Manage end-to-end payroll processing across multiple states, including tax filings, withholdings, garnishments, deductions, and reporting. (i) Identify and implement HR technology solutions (HRIS, applicant tracking, payroll platforms) appropriate for a growing organization. (j) Track and manage compliance deadlines, including required filings, postings, and reporting obligations. (k) Partner with leadership on workforce planning, employee engagement, and retention strategies.
Qualifications Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; in lieu of a degree, a minimum of five (5) years of progressive HR experience including hands-on payroll management will be considered
- Strong working knowledge of federal and multi-state employment law
- Experience with payroll systems and HRIS platforms
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple priorities
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
- High degree of integrity and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
Preferred:
- SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification
- Multi-state employment law experience
