SUMMARY OF FUNCTION
The Director of Human Resources provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight of all Human Resources functions for the VFW National Home. Responsible for developing, implementing, administering, and evaluating Human Resources policies, programs, systems, and practices that support the mission, strategic objectives, operational needs, and workforce of the organization. Serves as the senior Human Resources advisor to the Executive Director and organizational leadership regarding workforce planning, employee relations, employment law compliance, compensation and benefits, recruitment and retention, performance management, organizational development, workplace investigations, employee training and development, workers' compensation, unemployment, leave administration, workplace accommodations, Human Resources information systems, and employment-related risk management. Functions as a member of the organizational leadership team and participates in organizational planning, goal setting, policy development, workforce strategy, leadership development, organizational change, and other initiatives affecting the overall effectiveness and sustainability of the VFW National Home.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly responsible to the Executive Director of the VFW National Home. Responsible for the leadership, administration, effectiveness, and day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department. Responsible for providing the Executive Director and organizational leadership with professional Human Resources advice and recommendations regarding employment practices, workforce planning, employee relations, organizational structure, compensation and benefits, employment law compliance, policy development, performance management, workplace investigations, and Human Resources risk management. Responsible for administering Human Resources programs and policies within established organizational authority and for identifying matters requiring executive approval, legal consultation, or other specialized professional review. Responsible for the hiring, supervision, coaching, professional development, performance management, and evaluation of assigned Human Resources staff. Responsible for safeguarding confidential personnel, medical, compensation, investigation, legal, executive, and organizational information and for promoting consistent, fair, professional, and legally compliant Human Resources practices throughout the organization.
EDUCATION
Minimum:
Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, Labor Relations, Public Administration, or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and substantial directly related professional Human Resources experience may be considered. Professional Human Resources education and continuing training in employment law, employee relations, benefits administration, compensation, workplace investigations, and related disciplines expected.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Minimum:
Five years of progressively responsible professional Human Resources experience encompassing multiple Human Resources disciplines, including employee relations, recruitment and selection, benefits, employment law compliance, performance management, policy administration, and workplace investigations. Demonstrated experience advising supervisors, managers, or executive leadership regarding complex employee relations and Human Resources matters.
Preferred:
Seven or more years of progressively responsible Human Resources experience, including Human Resources management or leadership responsibility. Experience in a nonprofit, human services, residential, educational, healthcare, governmental, or similarly regulated environment is desirable. Experience with Human Resources information systems, benefits administration, compensation, workers' compensation, leave administration, workplace investigations, and regulatory compliance preferred.
