Position Specific Competencies

Leadership

Articulates a vision that others choose to follow. Models behaviors expected of others and inspires others to undertake challenging tasks and projects. This is in contrast to those who fail to articulate a clear vision or whose vision is not compelling enough to generate enthusiasm or commitment; who expect specific behavior from others when they are not doing these things themselves; and/or whose attempts to lead that fail to inspire others. The latter conditions usually create a shortage of followers who voluntarily take on challenging assignments.

Delegating Responsibility

Makes it a practice to delegate responsibility whenever it is appropriate to do so. Sees to it that employees have the ability, potential and motivation level to perform delegated work effectively and gives them enough authority to carry out these assignments. This contrasts with those who hold onto tasks that could be done by others, assign tasks without clear direction or sufficient authority, select inappropriate individuals to take on delegated assignments, or tend to overload certain individuals with tasks in a manner that creates an unbalanced workload on the team.

Job Skills

Possesses sufficient job skills and knowledge to perform the job in a competent manner. Is able to demonstrate skills and knowledge in day-to-day situations. This is distinctly different from those individuals who lack sufficient job skills or knowledge to meet job requirements or who have the skills and knowledge, yet struggle to apply them to day-to-day situations on the job.

Quantity of Work

Produces an amount of work that meets or exceeds job expectations. Makes sure that quality does not suffer as the quantity of work increases. Works effectively with peers and carries own share of team workload. This contrasts with those whose output level is clearly below organizational needs, those who make unacceptable tradeoffs between quantity and quality, and/or those whose output is typically below that of others when they are placed on a team.

Customer Focus

Personally demonstrates that external (or internal) customers are a high priority. Identifies customer needs and expectations and responds to them in a timely and effective manner. Anticipates and prevents delays or other things that can adversely affect the customer. Keeps customers informed about the status of pending actions and inquires about customer satisfaction with products or services. This is in sharp contrast to behavior patterns that tend to disappoint customers, leave them feeling forgotten and unimportant or that otherwise result in unmet needs or expectations.

Core Competencies

Communication

Communicates effectively and appropriately. Uses good judgment as to what to communicate to whom as well as the best way to get that accomplished. Speaks in a clear and credible manner, selecting the right tone for the situation and audience. Listens to others and allows them to make their point. This is quite different than those who tend to select the wrong means of communicating, or who communicate information to inappropriate people. It also contrasts with those whose messages are not clear or lack credibility, as well as those who demonstrate poor listening skills and are unreceptive to feedback.

Teamwork

Is an effective team player who adds complementary skills and contributes valuable ideas, opinions and feedback. Communicates in an open and candid manner and can be counted upon to fulfill any commitments made to others on the team. This is distinctly different from those who withhold ideas and opinions, offer ideas or opinions that rarely add value to team discussions, have established a track record with many unmet commitments, and/or have not contributed skills that complement the skills of others on the team.

Safety

Makes sure to understand every safety practice expected by the organization. Takes no shortcuts that increase the risks of accidents, personal injuries or equipment failures. Looks for unsafe practices in the workplace and takes responsibility to ensure that others are aware of the potential impact. This is distinctly different from those who are unaware of many safety expectations, take shortcuts that increase safety risks, and/or fail to recognize and take timely action to increase safe practices by others.
