Director of Finance & Human Resources

ProSearch is partnering with the University of Southern Maine Foundation to hire a Senior Director of Finance and Human Resources (Portland, Maine) , seeking a strategic, hands on leader with expertise in nonprofit finance, financial reporting, audit and 990 compliance, HR leadership, and long range financial planning to lead financial operations, oversee HR strategy, and drive organizational performance and sustainable growth. This hybrid, full time leadership role sits at the center of a mission driven organization that fuels transformation at the University of Southern Maine. You will own financial strategy and execution while shaping HR practices that support a high-performing, collaborative team. The Opportunity Reporting to the President and CEO, the Senior Director of Finance and Human Resources serves as a key member of the leadership team, responsible for financial strategy, financial reporting, HR leadership, and donor fund administration. This highly visible role partners directly with senior leadership, board members, finance committee stakeholders, university leadership, donors, auditors, and external partners to ensure strong financial governance, operational effectiveness, and organizational alignment. What You Will Do Finance Leadership and Financial Operations Lead nonprofit financial strategy, including budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and multi-year financial planning Oversee financial reporting, monthly close, audit readiness, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and compliance Serve as primary liaison to the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee, supporting fiduciary oversight and strategic decision making Lead the annual audit process and IRS Form 990 preparation and presentation Monitor investment performance, asset management, and cash positioning Oversee pledges receivable and revenue tracking to maximize collection and financial accuracy Partner with the University's Chief Budget Officer to align financial strategy and agreements Gift Fund Administration and Donor Compliance Lead development and oversight of gift agreements, donor funds, and endowments Manage creation, revision, and administration of restricted and unrestricted funds in alignment with donor intent Ensure compliance with gift policies, reporting standards, and regulatory requirements Oversee fund reconciliation, reporting, and documentation management Human Resources Leadership and Strategy Lead HR operations and HR strategy, including talent management, performance management, compensation, and employee experience Oversee payroll administration, benefits programs, and compliance with employment regulations Serve as primary HR contact and liaison with external vendors and consultants Maintain and enhance employee handbook, HR policies, and organizational practices Leadership, Collaboration, and Governance Partner cross functionally with Foundation, University, and external stakeholders Maintain the highest level of confidentiality across financial, donor, and employee data Support organizational initiatives, special events, and external representation as needed Lead with professionalism, accountability, and a strong service mindset What We Are Looking For 10+ years of experience in nonprofit finance, accounting, or financial leadership roles Proven expertise in financial reporting, audits, internal controls, and IRS Form 990 Demonstrated experience working with boards, executive leadership, and external stakeholders Strong background in HR leadership, payroll, compliance, and employee programs Ability to present financial data, budgets, and analysis clearly to non-financial audiences Advanced analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills High level of integrity, discretion, and professionalism Experience with financial systems and tools, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT preferred Education in non-profit accounting is preferred or the equivalent of 10 years of recent experience Master's degree preferred but not required Why Work Here This is an opportunity to step into a senior leadership role within a respected nonprofit organization, where your work directly supports student success and higher education advancement.
