This is a hands-on, physically active position caring for rescued farmed animals at a vegan sanctuary committed to lifelong care, dignity, and compassion. This position is ideal for someone who is animal-centered, dependable, hardworking, and comfortable with the realities of daily sanctuary work. About Longleaf Animal Sanctuary Longleaf Animal Sanctuary is a vegan farmed-animal sanctuary located on more than 400 acres in Spanish Fort, Alabama. We currently provide lifelong care to 28 residents: seven cows, eight steers, two calves, nine pigs, and two horses. We are in an exciting stage of growth and are building a team grounded in compassion, teamwork, responsibility, and respect for all beings. Responsibilities Perform daily feeding, watering, and health checks Clean and maintain barns, stalls, shelters, water troughs, and animal areas Assist with pasture care, maintenance, and development Monitor animal behavior, health, and well-being and promptly report concerns Provide enrichment, grooming, and routine care Assist with sanctuary projects, maintenance, and improvements Help transport animals when necessary Work cooperatively with other caregivers, staff members, and volunteers Qualifications Genuinely compassionate and committed to the well-being of farmed animals Positive, dependable, and able to work well as part of a team Able to take initiative and follow established animal-care procedures Comfortable performing physically demanding work and safely lifting up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation Comfortable working outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and other changing weather conditions Able to safely walk and work on uneven ground Reliable transportation to the sanctuary Farm-animal or sanctuary experience is preferred but not required Longleaf is a vegan sanctuary. Applicants do not need to be vegan, but they must be open to learning about a vegan or plant-based lifestyle and understand that animal products of any kind are not permitted on sanctuary property.
Hours and Compensation Full-time position:
40 hours per week Weekend and holiday shifts are required Occasional additional hours may be required based on animal-care needs Some weeks may not allow for two consecutive days off
Pay:
$18-$20 per hour, based on experience Two weeks (10 workdays/80 hours) of paid vacation annually. Five paid vacation days become available after six months of employment, with five additional paid vacation days available during the following six months. The two weeks may not be taken consecutively.
