Evening Manager on Duty Animal Care League - 4.1 Oak Park, IL Job Details Part-time $17.00 - $18.50 an hour 18 hours ago Benefits Employee discount Professional development assistance Qualifications Customer communication Teamwork Driver's License Driving Dog handling Guest services Full Job Description Part-Time Evening Manager on Duty Animal Care League | Oak Park, Illinois Part-Time | Monday - Friday, 4:00 PM-8:15 PM Animal Care League (ACL) is looking for a dependable, compassionate, and hands-on Evening Manager on Duty to help ensure our shelter runs smoothly during evening hours. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people and animals, can confidently make decisions in the moment, and is willing to roll up their sleeves and help wherever needed. The Manager on Duty serves as a key point person for staff, volunteers, guests, and animals during evening operations and helps create a safe, welcoming, and well-run environment. What You'll Do Provide Evening Leadership Serve as the Manager on Duty and primary point of contact for staff, volunteers, and guests during evening hours. Ensure smooth operations across all shelter departments. Monitor staffing, workflow, and daily priorities and adjust as needed. Provide guidance and support to staff and volunteers when questions or issues arise. Help maintain a positive, respectful, and collaborative environment. Communicate important updates, concerns, and incidents to appropriate leadership. Provide Hands-On Animal Care Jump in wherever needed to support the animal care team. Assist with cleaning kennels, cages, and animal areas. Assist with feeding, enrichment, walking, and general animal care. Help ensure animals receive appropriate care and that shelter standards are maintained throughout the evening. Recognize changes in an animal's health or behavior and communicate concerns appropriately. Coordinate transportation of animals to emergency veterinary care when necessary, following ACL protocols. Safety & Incident Response Monitor the facility for safety, security, and operational concerns. Respond appropriately to emergencies and unexpected situations. Ensure incidents involving animals, staff, volunteers, or guests are addressed promptly and documented accurately. Complete incident reports and communicate significant issues to leadership. Help ensure ACL policies and safety procedures are followed. Respond calmly and appropriately during stressful or challenging situations. Guest & Volunteer Support Help create a welcoming experience for adopters, guests, volunteers, and community members. Assist with questions, concerns, and customer-service issues that arise during evening hours. Support adoption and front-of-house staff as needed. Help volunteers understand their responsibilities and ensure they have the support they need to be successful. Facility & Closing Responsibilities Ensure the shelter is clean, organized, secure, and ready for the next day. Assist with end-of-day/closing procedures. Make sure animals are appropriately cared for and all necessary evening tasks are completed. Identify and communicate maintenance, supply, or facility concerns. What We're Looking For Previous hands-on animal experience in animal sheltering, veterinary medicine or animal care Previous leadership or supervisory experience is a plus. Strong judgment and the ability to make thoughtful decisions independently. Comfortable handling unexpected situations and remaining calm under pressure. Willingness to perform hands-on animal care and cleaning duties. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Reliable, responsible, and dependable. Comfortable interacting with a wide variety of people, including staff, volunteers, adopters, and members of the public. Ability to prioritize tasks and keep operations moving in a busy environment. Comfortable working with dogs and cats of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical or behavioral needs. Ability to safely lift and carry supplies and perform physical duties associated with animal care. Valid drivers license required. Spanish-speaking skills are a plus. This is a consistent evening schedule and requires someone who can reliably commit to all four scheduled days. Why Join Animal Care League?
