An Animal Care Worker or Manager manages animal care and grooming for a retail store that sells pets or for a pet grooming business. May also provide animal care and grooming at a kennel. Works with animals in shelters or rescue organizations. Works primarily with dogs and cats. Assists veterinarians with vaccinations or other procedures; screens people who want to adopt an animal from a shelter and provides information about caring for animals.
Shelter Supervisor Purpose Responsible for the day-to-day operation of Berea ARF's shelter, ensuring exceptional animal care, efficient shelter operations, excellent customer service, and a safe, well-maintained facility. Supervises shelter staff and volunteers, collaborates closely with the Healthcare Manager on animal care and population management, and supports the organization's mission through operational excellence and community engagement. Essential ResponsibilitiesShelter Operations Direct and oversee all daily shelter operations, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures. Monitor daily animal census, shelter capacity, space allocation, and animal movement to support efficient operations and individualized animal care. Collaborate with the Healthcare Manager to coordinate animal intake, transfers, foster placements, adoption locations, and overall population management. Ensure accurate animal records, statistics, and inventory are maintained within Shelterluv and other shelter systems. Enforce sanitation, disease prevention, and biosecurity protocols to protect the health and welfare of shelter animals. Identify facility, equipment, and safety needs and coordinate repairs, maintenance, and supply purchasing. Manages day-to-day operational expenditures within approved budget parameters and makes recommendations for cost-saving opportunities. Staff Leadership Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, coach, and evaluate shelter staff. Conduct performance reviews, address performance concerns, and recommend disciplinary action when appropriate. Lead training and continuing education for employees and volunteers to ensure consistent operational standards. Community & Partnerships Ensure exceptional customer service and positive public interactions. Maintain productive relationships with veterinarians, foster families, prison foster programs, adoption partners, law enforcement agencies, and other community organizations. Represent Berea ARF through facility tours, community events, and outreach opportunities as assigned. Support fundraising initiatives and community engagement efforts. Administration Prepare monthly operational reports for the Executive Director. Participate in staff meetings and contribute recommendations to improve shelter operations. Remain current on best practices in animal sheltering and animal welfare. Provide on-call support for shelter emergencies as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, animal welfare organization, or similar environment. Previous experience supervising staff or volunteers preferred. Veterinary technician or veterinary medical experience preferred. Experience with Shelterluv or other shelter management software preferred. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers, adopters, veterinarians, and the public. Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and compassionate animal care. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation preferred. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call emergencies. Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and handling animals safely. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Ability to work in close proximity to animals. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, sit; talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, keyboard and telephone. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements due to computer work. Light to moderate lifting is required, up to 25 pounds. Regular, predictable attendance is required. Moderate noise (i.e., business office with computers, phone, and printers, light traffic). Ability to work in a confined area. Ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time. Work environment is stressful at times. Irregular hours, including evening and weekend meetings are a normal part of the job.
