An Animal Care Worker or Manager manages animal care and grooming for a retail store that sells pets or for a pet grooming business. May also provide animal care and grooming at a kennel. Works with animals in shelters or rescue organizations. Works primarily with dogs and cats. Assists veterinarians with vaccinations or other procedures; screens people who want to adopt an animal from a shelter and provides information about caring for animals.
Perform scheduled RFID census scans throughout CCM vivaria to maintain accurate animal inventory records. Navigate vivarium spaces, including animal rooms, while following all facility safety and animal care procedures. Coordinate with supervisors during census routes to collect temporary card slips and identify building-specific concerns. Create, update, and verify animal identification card information within RFID/census tracking systems.
Maintain accurate records by reconciling:
Temporary cards Missing cards Incorrect card data Card-to-cage mismatches Scanner exceptions and discrepancies Support daily animal identification card lifecycle processes, including: Morning new-card printing Temporary slip collection End-of-day card deactivation Exception documentation and follow-up Communicate census updates, discrepancies, and unresolved issues with supervisors, transport teams, administrative personnel, and facility leadership. Maintain accurate documentation, including daily completion logs, discrepancy reports, and weekly quality-control metrics. Assist with training peers on census procedures and provide route coverage after demonstrating proficiency. Provide backup support for animal care activities, including: Routine animal room checks Cage care and husbandry support Cage wash operations General vivarium support tasks Follow all institutional, regulatory, and facility-specific procedures related to animal care and research operations.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience working in an animal facility, vivarium, laboratory, healthcare, or inventory management environment preferred. Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records and identify discrepancies. Comfortable working around laboratory animals and within a research animal facility. Ability to follow written procedures, maintain documentation, and communicate effectively with team members. Basic computer skills and ability to learn specialized inventory/RFID tracking systems. Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with supervisors and facility personnel.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with laboratory animal care, cage washing, or vivarium operations. Familiarity with animal identification systems, RFID technology, or inventory tracking systems. Experience working in a regulated environment (GLP, GMP, AAALAC-accredited facility, or similar).
