Job Description

Job Summary:
This position is responsiblefor assisting therapists before, during, and after hippotherapy session. The most important responsibility is safely controlling the horse. The horse handler is responsible for the day to day operations of the barn.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Retrieving, grooming, tacking and leading the horse. Work directly with the Barn Manager. Confirm volunteers support schedule needs of the day. Clean stalls, water buckets, feed, water, bathe horses. Clean therapy tools, and tack after use. Maintain overall cleanliness and safety of barn area. Unload feed bags and hay bales. Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience:
Experienced with care of horses preferred. Complies with all Finding Faith policies including the following : 1. Attends 50% of departmental meetings per year, 50% of facility meetings per year and is accountable for the information presented at all departmental and facility meetings by initialing minutes as directed. 2. Consistently reports to work on time and begins work promptly and performs duties for entire scheduled shift. 3. Maintains absentee rate within limits of status. 4. Notifies appropriate department manager of absences and tardiness. 5. Reads new policies and documents as instructed.
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
1. Ability to observe horse behavior, safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques to the horse. 2. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity 3. Ability to works well under pressure with minimal supervision.
Skills:
Ability to speak clearly and loudly enough to be heard by patients and staff.
Abilities:
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist patients in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers. 2. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds 3. Ability to works well under pressure with minimal supervision.
Work Environment:
Barn environment including indoor heated riding arena.
Mental/Physical Requirements:
"Must p ossess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with a Horse Handler involving standing/walking approximately 90% of the day walking, reaching, and lifting. Periodic stress occurs from physical demands."
