Town of Nantucket Our Island Home 28 - Hour - Laundry Worker
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Town's nursing facility, Our Island Home, seeks a Laundry Worker. The Laundry Worker is required to operate laundry equipment to keep the residents' clothing, linens and other machine washable items clean and sanitary to promote the utmost infection control techniques possible.
REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or equivalent; up to one (1) year prior work experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to recognize the priority of tasks and be able to complete tasks in a detailed, timely and safe manner despite frequent interruptions. An interest in working with the elderly. Must have physical dexterity to bend and reach to complete basic housekeeping tasks and to push, pull or lift department equipment as well as to stand, sit and/or walk for extended periods of the work day. Must be able to lift, at minimum, 50 lbs. 28 Hours; Benefits;

The employee is required to perform all similar or related duties.
Supervision Required :
Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, clear, detailed, and specific instructions govern the work or are explained with each assignment. Questionable situations are referred to the supervisor. The supervisor reviews the work in progress or upon completion as necessary.
Supervisory Responsibility :
The employee is not responsible for the regular supervision of any employees.
Confidentiality :
In accordance with the State Public Records law and HIPAA, the employee has minimal access to confidential information.
Accountability :
Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include adverse public relations, missed deadlines and personal injury.
Judgment :
Well-defined or detailed rules, instructions, and procedures cover all aspects of work. Independent judgment involves choosing the appropriate practices, procedures, regulations, or guidelines to apply in each case.

Work consists of routine or repetitive tasks and/or operations with few variations in established procedures.
Work Environment :
The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of Nursing home facility and a laundry room having to work with washing and drying equipment, chemicals and in confined spaces. Has occasional exposure to biohazards. Often required to work beyond normal business hours.
Nature and Purpose of Public Contact :
The majority of interaction is with internal co-workers and town employees and requires ordinary courtesy and tact. Employee interacts with co-workers to give and receive information regarding work. Contact with the public takes place on an occasional basis.
Occupational Risk :
The employee is exposed to personal injury when performing duties where the employee is exposed to moving equipment, cleaning chemicals, bio hazards, and dirt, dust and grease etc. Personal injury could occur, however, through employee failure to properly follow safety precautions or procedures. Examples of injury include bruises from falls, minor cuts or burns, exposure to bio hazards, or muscular strains from lifting or carrying heavy cleaning equipment or materials. Essential duties/ responsibilities/ functions Required to operate laundry equipment to keep resident clothing, linens and other machine washable items clean and sanitary and the principles of infection control such as appropriate temperatures used for laundering items, timely laundering of soiled material to prevent odor and spread of infection, and carts are sanitized daily. Sorts laundry appropriately and in designated area as no laundry is to be sorted in any resident room, kitchen, food storage areas etc. Ensures that Resident personal laundry is collected, transported, sorted, washed and dried in a sanitary manner and separate from other bed linens, etc. Ensures that all dirty/soiled laundry and clean laundry are properly stored away from each other in separate bins and separate rooms. A dirty bin or cart should NEVER be re-used to store or transport clean linen. Ensures that only linens and clothing are stored and transported in laundry areas/equipment. All dirty laundry is to be transported in covered carts designated on each wing of the facility for this purpose. Ensures proper transportation of laundry and delivers clean linen and Resident's clothing to rooms; stocks linen closets for nursing units and provides clean washables for Housekeeping and Dietary departments; ensures that no other items besides clean linens are stored in linen closets located on each wing and that no items are stored on the floor of said closet or stacked up to the ceiling and that no soiled linen is accumulated excessively in any area of the facility. Discards stained, torn or otherwise unacceptable items to ensure that all linens, bedding and resident personal clothing are in good condition. Makes sure that all chemicals, detergents and cleaning products present in laundry areas are properly stored and clearly marked. Monitors dryer vents and cleans them in accordance with a designated schedule for safety and equipment life purposes; maintains a Lint Log as required. Soiled laundry received is to be placed in the designated "melt away" bags for cleaning and protection of persons handling the bags. If contaminated with infectious or biohazard material, ensures the appropriate 'precaution' yellow bags are used. Wears appropriate PPE at all times. Ensures all chemicals, detergents, and cleaning products present in the laundry areas are properly stored, used, and clearly marked. Follows the required infection control and hand washing techniques. Maintains safe work practices and follows facility safety procedures. Maintains appropriate attendance records; arrives on time for work and is ready to perform assigned tasks. Follows facility conduct standards, policies and procedures in a drug and alcohol-free work environment. Meets requirements for all in-service education requirements and attendance per facility policy as well as state and federal requirements. Meets facility hygiene and dress code standards of appearance. Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with job functions. Required minimum qualifications

Special Requirements :

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill Knowledge:
Knowledge of the facility's cleaning devices, cleaning products, detergents, or equipment such as washers, dryers, irons, steamers, brooms, dry and wet mops and related chemicals. Knowledge of department operations as well as cleaning and infection control rules and policies.
Abilities:
Ability to recognize the priority of tasks and be able to complete tasks in a detailed, timely and safe manner despite frequent interruptions. Ability to take initiative to carry out job duties. An interest in working with the elderly. Works with others in a helpful, respectful, and courteous manner; must be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and residents/family members. Able to work in an interdisciplinary team environment.
Skill:
Proficient oral and written communication skills; good organizational skills. Effective mechanical skill required to effectively operate laundry equipment. Proficient customer service skills. Motor Skills :
Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Examples include operating cleaning equipment and folding.
Visual Demands :
Position requires the employee to routinely read instruction documents and equipment instrumentation for understanding. The employee is not required to routinely determine color differences.
