A Makeup Artist specializes in using cosmetics and applying makeup. Works in a salon and provides customized makeup for clients, or creates makeup for professional models, or works in a studio or theater to create makeup for actors and performance artists. May also advise on product development and participate in marketing for cosmetics companies.
Overview We are seeking an experienced, passionate, and certified Permanent Makeup (PMU) Lead Instructor to direct and teach our comprehensive Cosmetic Tattooing program. In this role, you will train aspiring technicians across all fundamentals of PMU artistry—from strict blood-borne pathogen sanitation to advanced machine shading and hair simulation techniques. The ideal candidate possesses deep technical expertise in microblading, machine work, and color theory, alongside a commitment to upholding safety standards (OSHA, CDC, NIOSH) and helping students build successful aesthetic businesses. Key Responsibilities & Essential Duties 1. Technical & Practical Instruction Teach hands-on and theoretical modules including:
Lash Enhancement, Natural Eyeliner, Lip Liner, and Lip Sparkling.
Specialty Services:
Beauty Marks and semi-permanent vs. permanent pigment application. Demonstrate mastery in both Hand Tool (SofTap®, Midas) and Digital/Rotary/Coil Machine techniques. Train students on proper Needle Groupings (flat, curved, round) and precision insertion depth based on skin histology. 2. Science, Safety & Sanitation Instruct students on complete Sterilization & Sanitation protocols, cross-contamination prevention, and blood-borne pathogen control according to OSHA, CDC, and NIOSH guidelines. Educate on skin anatomy, physiology, and skin layer depth to prevent scarring and poor retention. Teach correct Topical Anesthesia selection, potency, and application guidelines for optimal client comfort and safety. 3. Artistry, Color Theory & Mapping Guide students through Color Theory , pigment mixing formulas, and identifying skin undertones (warm vs. cool). Train students in facial symmetry, mapping techniques, and proper utilization of symmetry tools (e.g., BROW BOW Tool). 4. Client Management & Business Skills Teach procedure room setup/breakdown and proper client consultation workflows (including identifying high-risk clients). Educate on proper Pre- and Post-Procedure Care to ensure long-lasting client retention. Provide guidance on business setup (LLC/Incorporation, insurance, state licensing), pricing strategies, and student goal-setting. Instruct students on clinical photography (iPhone/iPad lighting and close-ups) for social media marketing and portfolio development.
Qualifications & Requirements Certification:
Active PMU/Cosmetic Tattooing Instructor Certification (or Master PMU IL state License regulations).
Experience:
Minimum [2+] years of active, hands-on experience as a working PMU artist with a strong portfolio. Prior teaching or apprenticeship training experience preferred.
Health & Safety:
Valid Blood-borne Pathogens (BBP) Certification, First Aid/CPR Certification, and thorough knowledge of local Health Department codes.
Technical Proficiency:
Expertise in both manual hand tools and digital rotary/coil machines across brows, eyes, and lips.
Soft Skills:
Exceptional communication, patience, dynamic public speaking, and a passion for mentoring students.
Pay:
$25.17 - $30.31 per hour
