This role focuses on animal handling, patient support, nursing assistance, sanitation, stocking, and clinical workflow support within the hospital. Veterinary Assistants work under appropriate supervision and are expected to recognize changes in patient condition, follow established protocols, and escalate concerns when needed. This position may involve working with hospitalized patients, assisting with diagnostic and treatment procedures, maintaining medical equipment and cleanliness standards, and supporting overall hospital operations.
Core Responsibilities:
Animal Handling & Patient Care Safely restrain and handle dogs and cats during: Exams Vaccinations Blood draws Diagnostic procedures Treatments Use gentle handling and low-stress restraint techniques Transport patients throughout the hospital Monitor hospitalized patients and report concerns promptly Feed and provide basic care for hospitalized patients Recognize signs of pain, distress, respiratory difficulty, or abnormal behavior and escalate appropriately Assist with euthanasia procedures in a compassionate and professional manner Clinical & Nursing Support Administer medications and treatments as directed Assist with subcutaneous fluid administration Assist with IV line setup and disconnection Treat and bandage minor wounds within training and protocol guidelines Perform simple grooming and comfort-care tasks including: nail trims, ear cleaning, bathing, and medicated baths Obtain and record medical histories for routine visits Collect basic patient information and vital signs Laboratory & Diagnostic Support Collect and prepare samples including: Urine Fecal Blood samples Package laboratory samples for outside laboratories Prepare and maintain laboratory equipment Assist with radiology and ultrasound procedures by: Preparing patients Positioning patients Providing restraint support Start up and shut down radiology equipment according to protocol Surgical & Sterilization Support Clean and sterilize surgical instruments Operate and maintain autoclaves Assemble surgical packs appropriately Prepare treatment and surgical areas Maintain cleanliness and readiness of dental and surgical equipment Medical Records & Administrative Support Enter patient records and treatment notes into practice management software Enter charges associated with services performed or assisted with Assist with prescription and diet preparation following veterinarian approval Maintain accurate and timely documentation Facility Maintenance & Inventory Clean and disinfect: Exam rooms Treatment areas Kennels and housing areas Surgical suites Clinical equipment Dispose of medical waste appropriately Weigh and monitor sharps containers as required Stock and organize: Exam rooms Treatment areas Housecall supplies General inventory Receive and organize incoming inventory shipments Scope & Escalation Expectations Veterinary Assistants are expected to work within established training and protocol guidelines and to promptly notify a Veterinary Technician or Veterinarian when: A patient's condition worsens Significant abnormalities are observed A case exceeds training or comfort level Emergency or complex medical concerns arise Examples of cases requiring escalation may include: Respiratory distress Suspected toxin ingestion Severe wounds Significant bleeding Neurological symptoms Rapid patient decline Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Previous veterinary, animal care, or kennel experience required Previous experience with veterinary practice management software required Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments Willingness to learn clinical and hospital procedures Strong communication and teamwork skills Ability to remain calm in a fast-paced environment Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and move throughout the shift Comfortable working with animals, medical equipment, cleaning chemicals, and biological materials Work Schedule Full-time and part-time positions available May include weekends, holidays, and evening shifts depending on hospital needs
Pay:
