Join Our Emergency Team South 40 Veterinary Hospital is seeking a dedicated Overnight Emergency Veterinary Assistant to join our growing emergency and critical care team. This position is ideal for an experienced veterinary assistant who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys providing compassionate care to hospitalized and emergency patients overnight. As part of our overnight team, you will work alongside veterinarians and veterinary technicians to provide exceptional patient care, assist with emergency procedures, monitor hospitalized patients, and help ensure our hospital runs smoothly during overnight hours. At South 40 Veterinary Hospital, we provide routine, urgent, and emergency veterinary services, including wellness care, advanced diagnostics, surgery, rehabilitation, intensive care, and canine boarding. Responsibilities Emergency & Patient Care Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with emergency and critical care patients. Monitor hospitalized patients and promptly report changes in condition. Obtain and record patient vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and pain assessments. Safely restrain patients for examinations, diagnostics, and treatments. Administer medications as directed by the veterinarian or veterinary technician (within state regulations and hospital protocols). Assist with oxygen therapy, CPR (RECOVER guidelines), and emergency stabilization. Maintain clean, comfortable, and sanitary patient housing. Walk, feed, and provide general nursing care for hospitalized patients. Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges. Medical Support Prepare examination and treatment areas. Assist with radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy, and other diagnostic procedures. Collect laboratory samples including blood, urine, and fecal samples as directed. Prepare laboratory samples for in-house testing. Prepare surgical patients and assist with anesthesia preparation and recovery. Clean, disinfect, sterilize, and maintain medical equipment and instruments. Restock treatment areas and maintain emergency supplies. Client Communication Provide compassionate updates to clients as directed by the veterinarian. Assist with discharge instructions and client education. Answer overnight phone calls and triage emergencies appropriately. Maintain professionalism and empathy during stressful situations. Hospital Operations Maintain accurate medical records within ezyVet. Enter charges for services and products accurately. Perform opening and closing duties for the overnight shift. Keep treatment areas, ICU, kennels, and common spaces clean and organized. Assist with inventory counts and supply restocking. Follow all hospital safety protocols and standard operating procedures. Participate in staff meetings and continuing education opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned. QualificationsRequired Minimum 1-2 years of veterinary assistant experience in a general practice, urgent care, or emergency hospital. Comfortable handling dogs and cats of all sizes safely and compassionately. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to remain calm and efficient in emergency situations. Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Basic understanding of veterinary terminology and patient care. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with assistance when needed. Reliable attendance for overnight weekend shifts. Preferred Emergency or ICU experience. Experience with ezyVet or similar veterinary practice management software. Knowledge of Fear Free handling techniques.
