JOB DESCRIPTION
: The Literacy Instructional Specialist assists classroom staff in all areas of literacy program and instructional support.
TYPICAL DUTIES
: Act as an instructional coach supporting effective, evidence-based literacy instruction across programs. Maintain a visible and ongoing presence in classrooms to support lesson planning, instructional materials, literacy strategies, and formative and summative assessment practices. Provide professional learning through modeling, co-teaching, and coaching to support staff implementation of research-based reading practices aligned with New York State Standards, Essential Elements, and the Science of Reading. Facilitate guidance, support, and ongoing development of ELA curriculum across BOCES programs. Provide specialized and differentiated small-group literacy instruction for students reading below grade level, while collaborating with teachers to build instructional capacity and strengthen literacy practices. Design, deliver, and support ongoing professional development using developmentally appropriate, assessment-driven instruction grounded in current research and best practices. Provide staff development focused on differentiated literacy instruction aligned to New York State ELA Standards and NYSED Science of Reading expectations. Support staff understanding and use of New York State ELA Assessments (K-12) and analyze student and program data to identify areas for instructional improvement. Provide oversight and guidance related to annual literacy performance assessments, including CBT and Regents Exams. Consult with teachers K-12 on the design, implementation, and monitoring of classroom-based literacy interventions for students with reading disabilities. Collaborate with the Instructional Specialist team to ensure consistent instructional support and a cohesive literacy framework across content areas. Perform other related duties as assigned by Administration.
QUALIFICATIONS
:
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years teaching experience. Experience with Science of Reading, preferred.
Education:
New York State Certification in Literacy. New York State Certification in Special Education, preferred.
