Job Description

Hickory Acres Kennel is a well-established pet boarding facility located in a peaceful country setting in Sheridan. We have been serving Central Indiana families since 1976, and we take pride in providing clean, safe, dependable care for every dog and cat entrusted to us. We are currently looking for reliable, hardworking animal lovers to join our team as Kennel Assistants. Kennel Assistants play a vital role in our daily operations by helping maintain the health, safety, comfort, and wellness of all boarding animals. Duties & Responsibilities This is a physically active animal care and cleaning position.
Responsibilities include:
Providing daily care for boarding pets, including feeding, watering, exercising, and giving medications as directed. Cleaning and sanitizing kennels, crates, yards, cattery areas, dishes, laundry, and shared spaces throughout the day. Monitoring pets for changes in health, behavior, appetite, bathroom habits, or signs of illness, and reporting concerns right away. Safely handling and moving dogs and cats of different sizes, ages, temperaments, and energy levels. Keeping accurate daily records for feeding, medications, elimination habits, and overall wellness. Providing appropriate interaction with pets through walks, yard time, play, and calm attention. Communicating professionally with clients, coworkers, and supervisors. Helping maintain a clean, safe, organized facility for both pets and people. Work Environment Kennel Assistants are regularly walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, cleaning, gripping leashes/equipment, and safely handling animals of various sizes. This position is performed in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and mud. Because animals need care every day, our facility is staffed daily, including weekends and holidays. Reliable transportation to our Sheridan location in all weather conditions is required. Qualifications Experience in pet care is preferred, but not required. We are willing to train the right person.
Applicants should be:
Reliable, punctual, and dependable. Comfortable working a flexible schedule, including holidays and some weekends. Able to work in a fast-paced environment with animal sounds, smells, hair, and allergens. Able to lift up to 50 pounds independently. Detail-oriented, especially with cleaning standards, feeding instructions, medication, and daily charting. Comfortable using a computer and able to type accurately. Able to take direction well and apply it independently. Comfortable and physically able to safely handle dogs of all sizes. Patient, observant, and committed to the well-being of the animals in our care.
