Job Description

The City of Biddeford has an immediate opening for the position of Animal Control Officer. This position is technical work in the investigation and enforcement of state and local animal welfare laws, ordinances, or rules within the City of Biddeford. Employee is appointed by the Chief as an Animal Control Officer, as outlined in Maine Revised Statutes, Title 7 §3947, with duties that include, but are not limited to, the enforcement of all applicable state laws and local ordinances that regulate animals and animal welfare. Additionally, employee shall control domesticated animals that are a cause of complaints in the community; shall control animals that pose a threat to public health or safety; and, may control undomesticated animals in matters on which no other department is charged by law to regulate. Work requires an application of seasoned judgment and skill in the thorough investigation and enforcement of the animal welfare laws. Employee may be called upon to perform other duties that involve animals general (i.e. this position is not restricted or limited to the enforcement of laws, ordinances, or policies that govern only canines and/or felines). Employee has the same authority as established by State of Maine law in the enforcement of the statutes that regulate animals and animal welfare. Hourly rate is $26.54 per hour. Requirements Certification as an Animal Control Officer. Thorough knowledge of the City ordinances and state laws that apply to the control of animals. Ability to maintain clear and definitive records. Ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with the public. Ability to handle and transport animals without causing trauma to the animal. Maintain certification in those areas that the employee has been certified. Compliance with departmental directives, rules, regulations, policies, and standards. Must possess a Maine driver's license. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work various hours and staggered workweek. Maintain a satisfactory level of fitness (physical, mental and technical) to complete assigned tasks.
