SUMMARY:
The Animal Control Officer is responsible for enforcement of state laws and city ordinances pertaining to the licensing and control of animals.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, or equivalent, plus one (1) year animal husbandry/control experience. Must have, or be able to attain, certification by the Maine Department of Agriculture. Must possess a valid Maine driver's license and an operational vehicle suitable for use in this position.
WORK ACTIVITIES
Check with Watch Commander/Dispatch daily for information regarding complaints requiring action. Provide animal control services for domesticated and undomesticated animals which may be a problem in the community and which are not controlled by other laws. Investigate reports of animal welfare law violations. Patrol areas with reported complaints of nuisance and take appropriate enforcement actions as necessary. Aid in rescue of trapped, wounded or sick animals. Maintain temporary animal holding pens in clean and operational condition. Work in conjunction with the office of the City Clerk, local Humane Society and the Maine Warden Service as needed to appropriately enforce laws and protect animals. May be required to humanely euthanize sick, wounded or injured animals when necessary. File activity reports on all incidents and complaints investigated. Subject to on-call services as situations require. Perform other duties as assigned.
