Help us change lives—one adoption at a time! The Humane Society of Parkersburg is looking for a compassionate, dependable, and enthusiastic Adoption Counselor to join our team. As an Adoption Counselor, you'll be one of the first friendly faces visitors meet when they walk through our doors. You'll help connect animals with their forever families, guide adopters through the adoption process, answer questions, provide support after adoption, and help ensure every animal receives the care and attention they deserve. This is a hands-on position for someone who is comfortable getting involved, solving problems, working as part of a team, and—most importantly— putting animals and people first. What You'll Do Welcome visitors, adopters, volunteers, and staff with warmth, professionalism, and exceptional customer service. Help members of the public meet and learn about shelter animals and find the right match for their family. Guide adopters through the application and adoption process, answer questions, and prepare adoption contracts. Provide helpful post-adoption support to families when needed. Answer phones and emails and provide accurate, friendly, and timely information. Process adoption applications received in person, by email, and through Pet Supplies Plus. Maintain accurate animal records and update medical histories in ShelterLuv when animals are adopted. Keep adoption applications organized and ensure kennel signage is current. Work closely with our Foster Coordinator to track adoption interest in animals currently in foster care. Coordinate with the Veterinary Technician to ensure adopted animals receive required spay/neuter procedures. Receive and document lost-pet reports and communicate public concerns to the appropriate Humane Officers. Collect adoption fees and donations and sell county tags and shelter merchandise. Help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming shelter environment. Ensure lobby animals are properly cared for, fed, and cleaned each morning. Clean and sanitize the lobby and intake office each morning and evening. Pitch in wherever needed to support our animals, our team, and our mission. What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who is: Passionate about animals and committed to helping them find safe, loving homes. Friendly and compassionate , with a genuine desire to help people. Professional and confident when interacting with the public. Comfortable handling animals , including cats and large animals. Organized and detail-oriented , with the ability to keep up with applications, records, emails, and daily responsibilities. Proactive and dependable , with the ability to work independently and take initiative. A positive team player who is willing to learn and jump in wherever needed. Committed to the mission of the Humane Society of Parkersburg. Qualifications & Requirements Previous animal shelter, veterinary, animal care, or related experience is preferred. Must be comfortable working with cats and other shelter animals. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds . Must be able to safely handle and restrain large animals weighing 100+ pounds .
