Responsibilities Perform detention officer duties related to the detention, searching, processing, safeguarding, security, and escort of detainees as required by the contract. Exercise surveillance and control over detainees and maintain order and discipline. Attend to housing units, feeding areas, lavatories, and the physical well-being of detainees as required. Make official entries in assigned post logbooks that are accurate, legible, and complete. Enforce applicable rules and regulations of the detention facility. Provide for the care, custody, and control of detainees. Remove detainees from holding areas using appropriate restraints and required security measures. Guard detainees during deportation or exclusion hearings, transportation, medical appointments, and other assigned activities. Perform all duties in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, contract requirements, and applicable standards. Follow company-wide safety policies and practices, including safety prevention, reporting, and monitoring requirements outlined in the Officer Handbook and other company safety policies. Successfully complete all required training, including defensive tactics and courses requiring physical stamina. Conduct security and sanitation checks of assigned areas before relieving the outgoing officer. Inventory assigned equipment and accurately document the results in the appropriate logbook. Receive authorized equipment and ensure that all equipment is in proper working condition. Ensure assigned communication radio is operational and has a fully charged battery. Respond appropriately to emergencies, disturbances, altercations, fires, evacuations, and other unexpected situations. Maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate discretion when handling sensitive information. Qualifications U.S. citizen or person lawfully admitted into the United States for permanent residence, as required by the contract. Must have resided in the United States for the last five years and maintain current physical residency in the continental United States, as required by the contract. At least 21 years of age. High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Education will be verified through the company background-check process, and proof of education may be required. A minimum of one year of security, detention, corrections, law enforcement, military, or related experience is preferred but not required. Relevant experience in customer service, public safety, supervision, conflict resolution, or positions involving responsibility and interaction with the public may also be considered. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may be accepted. Must successfully complete required criminal background and consumer credit checks in accordance with company and contract requirements. Must obtain and maintain any required DHS/ICE government clearance. Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English. Must successfully complete required medical examinations, pre-employment and/or random drug testing, and applicable job-related health requirements. Possess a valid state driver's license. Ability to obtain and maintain a state security guard license, as required. Ability to walk throughout all areas of the facility during tours and compliance inspections and work in varying weather conditions. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately during emergency situations. Ability to work assigned shifts and perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to greet and interact tactfully and professionally with detainees, visitors, coworkers, contractors, and members of the general public. Ability to follow and understand written and verbal instructions, policies, regulations, detailed orders, training materials, and facility procedures. Ability to prepare clear and accurate written and oral reports, including incident narratives. Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain alertness, demonstrate courage and professionalism, and remain even-tempered while performing assigned responsibilities. Ability to maintain poise and self-control during emergencies and unexpected situations that may involve physical or emotional stress. Maintain a professional appearance, calm demeanor, and appropriate discretion when handling confidential information. Demonstrate a high degree of integrity and accountability and comply with applicable American Correctional Association and DHS/ICE detention standards. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including individuals from different cultures, backgrounds, values, and lifestyles. Demonstrate proficiency in methods and techniques for safely securing and controlling detainees in accordance with required training, policies, procedures, and applicable standards. Successfully pass required writing, spelling, and basic mathematics assessments. Physical Demands This position requires employees to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely perform the essential functions of the position and maintain any physical fitness standards required by the contract. The position may require the ability to: Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 70 pounds occasionally. Push a wheelchair containing an individual weighing up to 300 pounds and assist individuals in and out of wheelchairs, as required. Bend, stoop, crawl, kneel, twist, reach overhead, and climb stairs, ladders, and slopes periodically. Stand, sit, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods. Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies and physically demanding situations. Maintain required physical fitness standards and proficiency with assigned special equipment throughout employment, when required by the contract.
