Description:
The BVI Accessibility Assistant works under the direction and supervision of the teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) and performs tasks related to the preparation of accessible educational materials and instructional environments based on the needs for students with visual impairments as indicated through an Individual Educational Plan (IEP)/Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP). Starting pay is $22.54 per hour. For additional details, please see the attached master agreement.
Job Summary:
Learn and adhere to established policies and procedures of the School District and Special Education Department to ensure that School District standards are enforced. Learn and adhere to ethical standards of the profession and seek to develop professionally to ensure educational standards are enforced. Maintain appropriate communication with the VI program supervisor and district staff. Adhere to the work schedule created with VI program supervisor and district staff. Work with individual students or small groups in accordance with plans developed by the VI staff. Assist the VI and district staff with accommodations, modifications and supplemental services necessary for educational needs of students with visual impairment. Keep the instructional staff (VI, O&M, and others) informed of any special needs or problems of individual students. Assist the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays according to VI program procedures. Transcribe materials including books, workbooks, testing material, and classroom work for students with visual impairments into accessible tactile, auditory, and/or print formats, including tactile maps and graphs. Use a variety of techniques to make print, auditory, and/or tactile materials and graphics as directed by VI professionals. Maintain accurate records of all transcriptions. Manage time to ensure that materials are available when needed by VI professionals or other team members. Remain current in computer technology as it relates to accessible material production and interfacing with the student's assistive technology. Provide technological assistance and/or training to teaching staff or other appropriate personnel according to VI program procedures. Assist in inventory, ordering, care, and maintenance of equipment and electronic materials, including assistive technology, required for students and staff, according to VI program procedures. Assist in the maintenance of confidentiality of student records. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers. Attend appropriate, approved staff development training and VI staff meetings. Other job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High school degree, GED, or equivalent experience. Two year or four year degree preferred. 3-5 years experience working with braille, or orientation and mobility and students with visual impairments. BVI program completion or enrollment in program required. Must have completed the
UEB Online:
Literacy Module 1 or be enrolled in the program Must have completed the NLS UEB Braille Certification Program or be enrolled in the program Ability to work effectively with parents, students, and other staff Ability to follow directions and on occasion, work independently. Demonstrated organizational skills. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Completes job duties in a timely manner. Willingness to begin or continue to participate in development opportunities, including those designed to acquire currently used braille and tactile transcription skills. Willingness to travel between school buildings as assigned. Additional qualifications may be established according to needs of the program.
