Job Description

The Hampton Criminal Justice Agency is seeking a dedicated and experienced Pretrial Investigator to play a critical role in the judicial process by providing judicial officers with comprehensive reports to assist in informed release and detention decisions. The incumbent conducts interviews, gathers and verifies information from multiple sources, and prepares accurate reports for court review. Working under general supervision and established procedures, the employee exercises independent judgment in determining the most effective methods, priorities, and timing for completing assigned responsibilities. Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills are essential for success in this role. Minimum Requirements Associates degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of three years of college in criminal justice, corrections, social work or related field. Two (2) years of full-time equivalent experience in investigative work preferably pre-sentencing investigations or a closely related experience. A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position. Must possess or obtain VCIN certification within 90 days of employment. Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion. Additional Requirements May require 24-hour on-call status. The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
