Hourly Job Summary and Purpose This position will provide assistance in the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location for a prescribed period of time to ensure the safety of school children, the safe, orderly flow of vehicular traffic, and perform related work as required. This job will require individuals to perform traffic control procedures on/off school property on roadways with potentially heavy, complicated and intense motor vehicle right of way. Work Objectives/Essential Functions Crossing Guard duties before and after school Gives clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic to prevent movement of vehicular traffic until all pedestrians have completely crossed the street. Makes sure signals are understood and obeyed before moving either vehicular or pedestrian traffic to ensure school children cross only at proper and designated locations. Notes any present or potential traffic hazards and report it to the Sheriff's Office as soon as possible. Report any vehicle code violations and write reports as necessary. Attends appropriate training sessions/meetings as requested or required by immediate supervisor, Sheriff's Office or Safety & Security Office. Enforce school rules and regulations. Reports students and/or pedestrians who do not adhere to safe street crossing procedures to his/her immediate supervisor. Education and Experience Education Attainment (Required): High School Diploma or its equivalent Education Attainment (Preferred): Relevant Experience (Required): Must be 18 years of age Must be certified by the Sheriff's Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties Relevant Experience (Preferred): Industry Licensure or Certifications (Required): Valid Virginia Driver's License Industry Licensure or Certifications (Preferred): Required Licensures and Certifications Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge:
Basic safety rules for school buildings Basic safe driving rules and procedures for Crossing Guards Techniques for communicating with children and adults English and grammar usage Current Virginia traffic laws and emergency procedures
Skills:
Complete Handle with Care Training Complete First Aid/CPR/AED Training Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm and hand signals, after training by the Stafford County Sheriff's Office and the Stafford County Public Schools' Safety & Security Office Use hand-held stop sign, reflector vest, cones, whistle, gloves and communication equipment Judge traffic flow, speed and direction of travel and group pedestrians in a logical manner
