Job Overview We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Code Enforcement Officer to join our municipal team. This role is vital in ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to building, zoning, environmental, and public health standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting properties, investigating violations, and working collaboratively with residents, contractors, and government agencies to promote safe and lawful community development. This position offers an opportunity to contribute significantly to public safety, environmental protection, and community well-being through diligent enforcement of applicable codes and regulations. Duties Conduct thorough inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to identify violations of building codes, zoning ordinances, environmental laws, and other regulatory standards. Investigate complaints from the public regarding code violations and document findings accurately. Enforce compliance by issuing notices of violation, citations, or orders for correction; follow up to ensure violations are addressed promptly. Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and construction plans to verify adherence to building and environmental regulations. Prepare detailed reports on inspection findings and violations for use in legal proceedings or administrative actions. Collaborate with construction teams, contractors, and property owners to facilitate compliance with safety standards such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations. Review permit applications and ensure proper documentation aligns with public permitting procedures. Stay current on changes in local building codes, environmental laws, construction regulations, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) regulations where applicable, and other relevant legal requirements. Assist in educating the public about code requirements through outreach initiatives or informational sessions. Maintain accurate records of inspections, violations, correspondence, and enforcement actions using Microsoft Office tools or specialized compliance management software. Requirements Proven experience in code enforcement or a related regulatory field within a government agency or similar environment. Knowledge of local building codes, zoning regulations, environmental law, construction standards, and regulatory reporting requirements. Familiarity with OSHA standards, construction experience, FDA regulations (if applicable), and construction regulatory compliance practices. Strong understanding of public health principles as they relate to environmental compliance. Excellent report writing skills with the ability to interpret technical drawings and documents clearly. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite including Word and Excel for report preparation and data management. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including residents, contractors, legal professionals, and government officials. Administrative experience managing documentation related to permits or compliance records. Ability to interpret complex technical information accurately while maintaining attention to detail. Valid driver's license preferred for conducting field inspections.
