Job Description

The Cumberland Fire Department is currently accepting applications for pre-employment testing for the position of Firefighter/EMT-Basic to be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Candidates must arrive by 5:45 p.m. the evening of the test. The testing site will be at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute, 13928 HazMat Drive SW, Cumberland, MD 21502. Candidates interested in participating in the testing process must submit an employment application by 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Applications along with detailed information about the pre-employment testing procedures can be obtained from the Cumberland Fire Department, 20 Bedford Street, Cumberland, Maryland 21502, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Applications can also be submitted through the City's website at ci.cumberland.md.us or Indeed.com. Minimum requirements for the position:
Individual must be 18 years of age at the time application is made; possess a high school diploma or equivalent of such, vision must be 20/40 or corrected to 20/20, and possess a valid driver's license. There is no training or experience required to apply or test for the Cumberland Fire Department. Candidates will receive all required training in the Fire Academy. Once hired, an employee must maintain a minimum of an EMT Basic license throughout his/her career with the Cumberland Fire Department. The City is offering a $5,000 signing bonus for Maryland-licensed Advanced Life Support Providers. The acceptance of the bonus is optional and its payment is subject to terms, including its full-payment being conditioned upon the employee's successful completion of on-the-job firefighting training and his/her completion of a minimum of five (5) years' employment with the City of Cumberland Fire Department Job type Full-time Shifts and schedules Overnight shift Rotating shift Day shift Monday to Friday Benefits Dental insurance Health insurance Life insurance On-the-job training Paid holidays Paid time off Retirement plan The City of Cumberland offers a liberal benefits package which includes State of Maryland retirement, deferred compensation program available, choice of hospitalization plans, prescription card, vision program, dental plan available, sick leave, paid vacation/holidays, and life insurance. The work schedule is a Kelly Day Schedule, 24 hours on/48 hours, off following an 8-20 week recruit training period upon which time a crew assignment will be made. Training period varies based on EMT training. The City of Cumberland is a full-service community of 20,500 citizens, situated adjacent to Interstate 68 in beautiful Western Maryland. EEO/ADA.
