  • Serve as an expert in aviation safety and retardant aircraft limitations.
  • Direct the activities at an airtanker base in support of wildland fire suppression.
  • Apply multi-agency policy, agreements, and protocols to ensure effective interagency aviation operations.
  • Oversee the planning, scheduling, and monitoring of all flights and resources assigned to the airtanker base.

Secondary Coverage:
Prior wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
  • Some Fire positions may have Conditions of Employment such as: a valid state driver's license; a commercial driver's license (CDL); pre-appointment and random drug testing; or a physical or medical examination.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GW-08: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GW-07 grade level in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience may include: Inspected, mixed and loaded retardant chemicals to assure quality control and not to exceed aircraft limitations; Dispatched fixed and rotor wing aircraft after determining flight information; Kept records of incident and accident reporting, retardant deliveries, consumption levels, and/or retardant costs per operation; Completed daily flight invoices and contract daily diaries. For the GW-09: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GW-08 grade level in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience may include: Assisted in planning, scheduling, and monitoring all flights out of a base for resource and fire related projects; Assisted in providing facility maintenance oversight and procurement for repairs and improvements; Assisted in managing the safe and efficient loading of properly mixed retardants into airtankers; Assisted in preparing and directing the implementation of airtanker base operational plans; Assisted in administering aircraft and retardant contracts.
Selective Placement Factors:
Incumbent is required to have and maintain Incident Qualification and Certification System (IQCS) qualifications as an Airtanker Base Manager (ATBM). Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) and Forest Service - Fire Program Management (FS-FPM) qualifications must be met by the time of selection.
