Summary Under general supervision, the Firefighter/EMT-B responds to fires, medical emergencies, rescue situations, hazardous conditions, and other incidents requiring emergency services. The position operates fire apparatus and emergency vehicles, conducts fire suppression and rescue operations, delivers emergency medical care, assists with fire investigations, maintains equipment and facilities, and prepares required documentation. The position includes a one-year probationary period during which performance is evaluated by the FAO, Company Officer, and Fire Chief; additional testing may be required after probation. Organizational Relationships This position reports to the Lieutenant, Fire Chief, and Emergency Management Coordinator. The position has regular contact with department employees, county staff, elected officials, state and federal agencies, volunteer organizations, the media, and the general public. This is a non-supervisory position. Essential Duties Respond to emergency calls and operate fire apparatus en route to incident scenes. Provide fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services as required. Prepare reports documenting emergency incidents. Drive, operate, inspect, and perform tasks associated with fire department apparatus and equipment. Perform rescue operations for trapped or injured persons and provide necessary emergency medical care. Respond to fire alarms, assist in fireground operations, connect hoses, maintain pumping equipment, direct water or chemical streams, and climb ladders. Assist with medical and rescue needs at fire scenes and determine hydrant/hose operations. Maintain certifications through ongoing training; participate in instruction of department personnel. Clean, re-equip, and restock vehicles after calls; perform daily inventories and vehicle checks. Clean and maintain station facilities, equipment, and apparatus; ensure readiness at all times. Study area streets and high-hazard locations; assist the fire marshal with inspections. Participate in fire prevention programs, investigations, code enforcement, and operations related to hazardous materials, natural disasters, and major incidents. Complete documentation required by policy and state law for fire and medical reports. Perform other related duties as assigned. Must be organized, flexible, and responsive to shifting needs. Physical Requirements and Work Environment Work occurs both indoors and outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions. Work may involve rotating shifts, extended workdays, and on-call status. Employees may work near moving equipment, in noisy environments, and may experience exposure to life-threatening situations, infectious disease, hazardous materials, extreme heat, humidity, or unknown dangerous conditions. Physical activities required include straight pulling, grasping, repeated bending, standing, sitting, crouching, twisting, kneeling, stooping, pushing, crawling, climbing ladders and stairs, reaching above shoulders, walking, and carrying up to 75 pounds. Moderate lifting up to 100 pounds may be required. Must be able to read, write, operate vehicles, and identify shades of color. Hearing ability is required for essential functions. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures; standard office practices; and business English, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic. Skills include the ability to type at least 50 words per minute; operate or learn to operate computers and Microsoft Office; maintain effective working relationships with county personnel, officials, and the public; and maintain necessary certifications.
