Position overview The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking to fille the position of DOC Southern Region Deputy Commander of Investigations. This position serves as a full-line supervisor to DOC Southern Region investigation staff reviewing all final investigation reports and when approved for forwarding, approves the letter of transmittal, briefly outlining the elements of the investigation, the conclusion and the recommendations. This role additionally conducts special projects and investigations of unusual incidents at the request of the program manager, implements policies and procedures to enhance and stream-line the investigative process, and works closely with State's Attorney's to ensure a case is properly prepared for persecution. Essential Functions Serves as full line supervisor Reviews all final investigation reports and when approved for forwarding, approves the letter of transmittal, briefly outlining the elements of the investigation, the conclusions, and the recommendations Conducts and participates in the most highly controversial, complex and sensitive investigations and inquiries involving mid-level management personnel who have been involved in any violation of Illinois and federal laws Serves as a liaison with appropriate law enforcement agencies on a local, state or federal level, to provide expertise in resolving various investigative issues Conducts weekly case reviews with each investigator to ensure they are kept abreast of the workload and tasks requiring attention Monitors major cases and assigns work of field investigators in the absence of the Program Manager Controls the storage and logging of physical evidence in appropriate lockers and ledgers Serves as liaison between the facility Internal Investigations Units and the Intelligence and Internal Investigations Unit Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above Minimum Qualifications Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college with major course work in law enforcement/corrections Requires three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in law enforcement investigatory concepts and techniques. Preferred Qualifications Prefers at least four (4) years of supervisory experience Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience conducting investigations, including interviewing people, gathering and compiling pertinent investigative/ information data, and writing reports Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience writing and interpreting policy Prefers at least four (4) years of professional experience working with and maintaining confidential information Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience preparing cases for prosecution Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience working with outside law enforcement agencies on a local, state, or federal level Prefers at least two (2) years of professional experience developing strategies to enhance a program area Prefers at least one (1) year of experience using Consolidated Listing of Incidents and Crimes (CLIC) and/or Institutional Listing of Incidents and Crimes (ILIC), or similar database, to input and track data for incidents and crimes Prefers intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, or similar program Conditions of Employment Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver's license Requires ability to carry a firearm Requires the ability to qualify with firearms prior to the completion of the initial pre-service training curriculum and annually thereafter in accordance with agency directive and state or federal laws Requires possession of an active Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) and must maintain active status while in the position Requires ability to pass the
