Description We are looking for an experienced legal specialist to support a team of hearing officers in New York, New York. This Long-term Contract position is well suited for an inactive attorney, Juris Doctor graduate, or paralegal with a strong background in administrative hearings and quality oversight. The person in this role will serve as a key point of contact for leadership, help strengthen consistency across case handling, and contribute to training and continuous improvement efforts.
Responsibilities:
- Act as the primary liaison between the hearing officer team and the supervising authority, ensuring clear communication and timely issue resolution.
- Provide day-to-day guidance to a group of five hearing officers through coaching, answers to procedural questions, and practical feedback.
- Review hearing-related work for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established standards, offering quality control support where needed.
- Assist with onboarding and ongoing development initiatives by delivering training and reinforcing best practices across the team.
- Identify opportunities to improve workflows, documentation practices, and overall program effectiveness, and support implementation of those enhancements.
- Step in to manage hearing officer duties when coverage is needed or caseload demands increase.
- Prepare and assess case materials, including evidence summaries, legal research, and written documentation associated with hearings. Requirements
- Juris Doctor, inactive attorney status, or paralegal background required; actively licensed attorneys are not being considered for this role.
- Prior experience serving as a hearing officer is required.
- Background in a lead, supervisory, or quality control capacity within a hearings environment is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to train, mentor, and support team members in a legal or quasi-judicial setting.
- Strong skills in legal research, legal writing, and preparation of evidence summaries.
- Excellent judgment, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Ability to maintain consistency, accuracy, and professionalism while working in a structured program environment.
