Recruit & Academy Graduate/Academy Enrolled Job Type:
Full Time Newport Beach, CA Newport Beach Police Department Salary:
$8,902 - $13,153
Monthly Position Summary:
Attends a basic police academy on a full-time basis. The academy is certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) and is designed to prepare candidates for the requirements and responsibilities of a sworn police officer.
Essential Functions:
Attend, participate in and successfully complete pre-academy training, POST-approved basic police academy training courses and the Newport Beach Police Department Field Training Program, while maintaining academy and department standards for the duration of attendance; Perform non-sworn, police-related tasks directly for the Police Department during non-academy hours, which may include planning and research assistance, dispatching, jail operations, property assignment and customer relations desk duties and other support services functions; Receive training in investigating techniques, enforcing traffic systems, lawful arresting duties and booking procedures, physically restraining law violators with a measured approach, writing citations for violations and writing efficient reports; Participate in physical fitness, agility, conditioning and self-defense exercises; first aid and CPR training; May be required to work with and around specially trained police dogs; and Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Recruit:
Must have the ability to successfully complete a California POST Basic Academy and the City of Newport Beach Police Department Field Training Program.
Academy Graduate:
Must possess current California POST Basic Academy certificate; and must have the ability to successfully complete the City of Newport Beach Police Department Field Training Program.
Academy Enrolled:
Must be currently enrolled in a California POST Basic Academy; and must have the ability to successfully complete the City of Newport Beach Police Department Field Training Program. Equivalency to high school graduation•. College level coursework or other specialized training in police science, psychology, public administration or related field is highly desirable. Due to the performance of some field duties which require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid and appropriate California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required. Legally authorized under federal law to work in the United States. Minimum age at time of appointment is 20.5 years. Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose a criminal record. Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation. Be found to be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition, including bias against race or ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. Record must be free from conviction of any felony or misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or domestic violence, and from an excessive number of citations for traffic violations. Background history should indicate responsibility, dependability, honesty, integrity, acceptable communication skills, good judgment and the ability to relate well to others.
