Under the general supervision of the Department Director or designee, attends an approved police academy. This position is responsible for gaining the skills, knowledge, and credentials required to be an effective Public Safety Officer (PSO) II or PSO III at the City of Grand Haven Department of Public Safety. Upon completion of the police academy and passing score on the MCOLES licensing exam, the recruit will be promoted to full-time PSO II or PSO III dependent upon candidate's qualifications. Additional Information This non-sworn recruit position is a full-time employee part of the non-union benefit group. The payrate for this position is $26.93/hr. The recruit will be eligible for benefits on their date of hire. The candidate will be paid for all hours worked while attending the academy. The City of Grand Haven will pay directly for the recruit's academy, including tuition, uniform, and student fees. The recruit must remain in good academic standing at all times. Recruits will follow the chain of command set forth by the police academy regarding time off requests, appointments, emergencies, etc. during the academy. Any issues that arise during the police academy about the recruit will be brought to the Chief's attention by the Director of the police academy. The recruit will agree to remain in the City's employment for four years upon successful completion of the police academy. Should the employee leave employment for any reason prior to four years, voluntary or involuntary, the recruit shall repay the City a proportionate share of the total cost of the academy. While in the academy, the employee will be responsible for: Participating in all required courses and training established at the academy. Following instructions and guidance set forth by instructors at the academy. Maintaining strong communication with instructors at the academy and direct supervisors at the City of Grand Haven. Required Education, Training and Experience Possession of a high school diploma or GED. Good powers of observation, sound judgment, and good moral character. Excellent physical and mental condition, courage, strength, agility, and ability to withstand stress. Proficiency in the use of firearms. Ability to pass rigid physical examination, and thorough background investigation. Must successfully pass the department's physical agility test. Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and be capable of adapting to potentially violent or unstable situations.

Moving frequently in and out of patrol vehicles. Frequent reaching and turning in operating motor vehicle and ability to use radio and attendant equipment in vehicle.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a training environment including both classroom and field training. This position will frequently work in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather-related heat and cold, rain, wind, fire, and varying weather conditions; may occasionally work in an office/classroom setting. Once promoted to a PSO II or PSO III, work is frequently performed in the community in close proximity to members of the public with possible exposure to a variety of disease agents and to bloodborne pathogens. Other Requirements Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a citizen of the United States. Must not have any felony convictions or certain misdemeanor convictions. Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License.
