This is a paid student internship that is eligible for tuition assistance of $250.00 for every 500 hours of work; tuition assistance is paid directly to your higher education institution for program expenses. The following educational institutions have been approved for tuition assistance: Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College; University of Minnesota Duluth; Lake Superior College; University of Wisconsin-Superior; Hibbing Community College.
SUMMARY/PURPOSE
To provide support to the Police Department through City ordinance enforcement and investigation and other community service and administrative tasks. Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) 1. Patrol designated areas in support of the Department's responsibility for City ordinance enforcement. 2. Identify, report, and/or correct hazards to public safety. 3. Establish and maintain professional relationships with the general public. 4. Maintain a positive, visible Department presence in the community. 5. Take reports over the phone, in person, or through online reporting, and complete follow up as needed. 6. Collect and preserve evidence. 7. Testify in court as needed. 8. Assist patrol officers in non-enforcement related activities. 9. Conduct follow-up investigations on minor hit-and-run or property damage accidents. 10. Provide traffic control at special events, major fires, parades, or crashes. 11. Arrange for the towing of disabled, seized, or abandoned vehicles. 12. Provide explanations of police protocols and procedures to the public. 13. Report community concerns to sworn officers. 14. Refer calls and walk-ins to appropriate police personnel while working the front desk. 15. Perform administrative tasks for police personnel. Job Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Age Requirement A. Must be age 18 or older. Education & Experience Requirements A. Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a two or four-year undergraduate program (i.e., criminal justice, criminology, or a closely related field of study), working towards completion of Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) licensing requirements. Program enrollment must be verified by educational institution. Tuition assistance to be paid directly to educational institution for program expenses. License Requirement A. Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota driver's license or equivalent. Knowledge Requirements A. Knowledge of Minnesota criminal and traffic laws. B. Knowledge of local regulations governing animal control and parking. C. Knowledge of geographical and cultural aspects of the City and district assigned. D. Knowledge of Departmental policies and procedures. E. Knowledge of available support and governmental agencies and the services they provide. F. Knowledge of radio communication procedures. Skill Requirements A. Skill in accurately observing, perceiving, and recalling persons, places, objects, and incidents. B. Skill in clearly, concisely, and accurately describing observations in oral or written form. C. Skill in operating a motor vehicle in a safe and defensive manner. D. Skill in operating a personal computer. E. Skill in questioning and interviewing suspects and witnesses. F. Skill in applying first aid or medical attention to injured persons. G. Skill in analyzing situations to determine appropriate action. H. Skill in communicating to exchange or convey information, or give instructions. Ability Requirements A. Ability to maintain and use patrol equipment. B. Ability to remain alert while seated on patrol for long periods of time. C. Ability to write legibly. D. Ability to use both digital and analog mobile communication equipment. E. Ability to maintain a professional and business-like demeanor, even during stressful and adverse situations. F. Ability to act decisively while exercising good judgment. G. Ability to understand, implement, and give oral instructions. H. Ability to read and interpret a variety of legal and technical data. I. Ability to establish effective working relationships with superiors, peers, and the general public. J. Ability to create and maintain a positive working environment that welcomes diversity, ensures cooperation, and promotes respect by sharing expertise with team members, fostering safe work practices, and developing trusting work relationships. Physical Ability Requirements A. Remain physically able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time. B. Ability to lift and carry equipment and other items weighing up to 75 pounds alone, and up to 150 pounds occasionally with assistance. C. Ability to see well enough (with or without corrective lenses) to identify license plates and vehicles, the status of parking meters, and to identify traffic hazards, both to self and others. D. Ability to attend work on a regular basis. The notice of appeal shall be in writing, shall contain a complete statement of the matter in controversy and the relief requested, and shall be signed and dated by the appellant. The notice shall be addressed to the Civil Service Board and be delivered to the Human Resources Office.
