GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs varied specialized police work in the enforcement of criminal law in an assigned geographical area of the Texas Department of Public Safety. Responsible for investigating criminal offenses committed within the assigned area. Responsible for maintaining law and order in the event of riots, prison breaks, natural disasters, civil disorders, or protest demonstrations. Work is performed under the limited supervision of a Ranger Lieutenant with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The following Military Occupational Specialty codes are generally applicable to this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist local agencies, public officials, and officers wherever requested throughout Texas; assists DPS Services when requested. 2. Perform liaison with local agencies within the assigned geographical area. 3. Initiate or assist in the investigation of felony crimes, collects and preserves physical evidence; uses technical investigative equipment. 4. Prepares detailed modus operandi reports. 5. Confer with local, state, and federal law enforcement officers to obtain or provide information concerning criminals and criminal activity. 6. Assist local law enforcement agencies when requested to provide training; assume a lead position when requested or merited. 7. Assist various law enforcement agencies in performing specialized police work; accompanies local officers to areas outside their jurisdiction to apprehend offenders. 8. Assist in raids; makes arrests, executes warrants; transports prisoners; testifies in court and before grand juries; organizes and/or participates in raids, searches, and manhunts; interviews suspects and witnesses; maintains assigned equipment; provides security for individuals at the direction of the courts, provides security for the Governor on in state travels; conducts searches on horseback; engages in pursuit driving; and practices and maintains enforcement skills. 9. Responsible for the execution of court orders, serving warrants and civil processes in the confiscation of assets, property, equipment or illegal devices. 10. Conduct special investigations for or of other state agencies, institutions, or departments when authorized to do so. 11. Perform considerable public liaison activity which may include addressing schools and civic groups. 12. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies. 13. Perform other duties as assigned. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and

Education

• High School Diploma/equivalent. Experience
• Must be a retired commissioned officer who has retired from the Employees Retirement System of Texas and whose last position was as a commissioned officer within the department and attained the rank of Sergeant or higher with the Texas Rangers Division. Licensure and/or Certification
• Must be certified as a Texas peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, in good standing. If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license from state of residence. Regulatory Knowledge
• Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.

Must be well versed in Agency goals, objectives, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; federal and state statutes, rules, regulations pertaining to law enforcement activities; and of criminal and civil court proceedings and rules of evidence. Supervisory/Managerial/Leadership skills

• Knowledge of management/supervisory methods and principles, performance/productivity standards, and fiscal/budget management. Ability to develop plans, policies, and procedures for efficient workflow and overall effectiveness. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change. A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary. Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
