at Robert Half in Batavia, Illinois, United States Job Description Description We are looking for an experienced Labor & Employment Attorney to support a fast-paced retail organization in Batavia, Illinois. This Long-term Contract position will focus on advising business leaders on workplace law matters, managing agency responses, and helping the company navigate employment-related risk across its operations. The ideal candidate brings strong judgment, employer-side labor and employment knowledge, and the ability to provide practical legal guidance in a dynamic business environment.

Responsibilities:

• Advise designated business teams on a broad range of labor and employment issues, including hiring practices, background screening, workplace policies, leave administration, accommodations, pay practices, employee discipline, separations, and employee relations concerns.
• Assess legal exposure in day-to-day employment matters and provide practical recommendations that align with applicable federal and state laws as well as sound business practices.
• Handle pre-litigation matters such as demand letters, agency complaints, and related filings by developing response strategies and preparing written submissions on behalf of the organization.
• Draft position statements, internal legal analyses, case evaluations, and executive-ready summaries that clearly outline risk, strategy, and recommended next steps.
• Represent the legal function in mediations and support dispute resolution efforts, including coordinating settlement strategy when appropriate.
• Partner with internal stakeholders to address sensitive workplace issues, including matters involving labor relations and employer compliance obligations.
• Contribute to the defense of employer-side employment claims by supporting briefing, motion drafting, discovery strategy, and case preparation as needed.
• Perform additional legal assignments that support the Labor and Employment team and broader business objectives.
• Monitor developments in employment law and apply updates to ongoing guidance and risk management practices.

The pay range for this position is 70 to 90 based on experience. Benefits available to contract/contract professionals, include medical, vision, dental, and life and disability insurance. • Bachelor's degree is required.
• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school is required.
• At least 5 years of progressive experience practicing labor and employment law in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination of both.
• Active attorney license in the applicable jurisdiction, or the ability to obtain licensure promptly, is required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of employer-side federal and state labor and employment law is required.
• Experience responding to administrative charges, preparing legal memoranda, and advising on workplace investigations or disputes is required.
• Strong legal writing skills, including experience with motions, briefs, discovery, and other employment-related work product, are preferred.
• Prior experience supporting a retail or multi-location business environment is a plus.
