Associate Attorney Scullen Law, PLLC Troy, MI Job Details Full-time $80,000 - $100,000 a year 10 hours ago Benefits Paid holidays Health insurance Dental insurance 401(k) Paid time off Flexible schedule Qualifications Law Business formation Doctor of Law (JD) Attention to detail Bar Communication skills Full Job Description Scullen Law, PLLC | Metro Detroit, Michigan Primarily Remote |
Full-Time Salary:
$80,000 base + production and origination bonuses Scullen Law, PLLC is seeking an Associate Attorney to join our Metro Detroit law firm. This is an excellent opportunity for a recently licensed attorney or an attorney in the early stages of their career who is interested in developing a broad transactional and probate practice while working directly with experienced attorneys and clients. Our firm is a small practice that emphasizes high-quality legal work, responsiveness to clients, professional development, and a flexible working environment. The Associate will have the opportunity to take meaningful responsibility for client matters early in their career while receiving training and support from the firm's attorneys. Practice Areas The Associate's practice will primarily include:
  • Probate and estate administration;
  • Guardianship and conservatorship proceedings;
  • Probate-related litigation;
  • Estate planning, including wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and related documents;
  • Trust administration; and
  • Business and transactional matters, including entity formation, contracts, business transactions, and general counsel matters. Prior experience in these areas is helpful but is not required. We are willing to train the right candidate. Responsibilities The Associate will gradually assume responsibility for matters including:
  • Communicating directly with clients;
  • Preparing probate petitions, pleadings, inventories, accountings, and other court filings;
  • Attending and independently handling probate court hearings;
  • Assisting with contested probate, trust, guardianship, and conservatorship matters;
  • Preparing estate planning documents;
  • Assisting clients and fiduciaries with estate and trust administration;
  • Drafting and reviewing contracts and other business documents;
  • Conducting legal research and preparing correspondence and memoranda; and
  • Managing assigned matters from intake through completion as the Associate gains experience.
We do not have a traditional annual billable-hour requirement. Our focus is on performing high-quality work, serving clients well, efficiently managing assigned matters, and developing professionally.
Qualifications Applicants should:
  • Be admitted to the State Bar of Michigan;
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Be organized and capable of managing multiple client matters;
  • Have sound judgment and attention to detail;
  • Be comfortable communicating directly with clients;
  • Be interested in developing a long-term practice in Michigan; and
  • Be willing to learn and take increasing responsibility as their experience develops.
Recent law school graduates and attorneys with approximately 0-3 years of experience are encouraged to apply. Compensation The position includes a guaranteed base salary of $80,000, together with substantial opportunities for additional compensation based on productivity and business development. The Associate will be eligible for:
  • Production-based bonuses tied to collected legal fees attributable to the Associate's work; and
  • Origination bonuses for new matters and client relationships brought to the firm.
The compensation structure is intended to provide the security of a guaranteed salary while allowing total compensation to increase meaningfully as the Associate becomes more experienced, productive, and involved in developing business. Attorney billing rates are periodically increased as experience and responsibility grow, creating additional opportunity for compensation growth over time. Benefits & Work Environment Benefits include:
  • Health insurance;
  • 401(k) eligibility;
  • Professional malpractice insurance;
  • Bar dues and reasonable continuing legal education expenses;
  • 10 days of paid time off, in addition to firm holidays, with additional flexibility when appropriate; and
  • A primarily remote working arrangement.
Although the position is primarily remote, the Associate must be located in the Metro Detroit area and available for in-person court appearances, client meetings, firm meetings, and other matters when appropriate. Office space will be available for client meetings and for the Associate's use as needed. Why Scullen Law? This position is intended for an attorney who wants more than a traditional entry-level associate role. Because we are a small firm, the Associate will work directly with the firm's attorneys and clients and will have the opportunity to gain substantive experience relatively quickly. Rather than spending the first several years of practice performing only limited portions of larger matters, the Associate will be trained to develop the skills necessary to independently handle client matters. We are looking for someone interested in growing with the firm over the long term and developing their own practice, client relationships, and areas of expertise. Interested candidates should submit a resume, law school transcript, and brief cover letter describing their interest in the position.
